21 Savage: A Lot Meaning
-
In "A Lot", 21 Savage (featuring rapper J. Cole) talks about his childhood, growing up around crime in Atlanta, being in the Bloods gang, and seeing death around him. He talks about his rise to fame from nothing, his struggles to get there, and the sacrifices, the sacrifices on personal relationships, the sacrifices on himself and his mental health. He says "Everyday that I'm alive, I'ma ride with the stick/I'd rather be broke in jail than be dead and rich" meaning that he is prepared to accept that for the rest of his life he will have to fight to stay alive, and to fight against rival gang members and people who want him dead. He then goes on to say that he will die before he snitches on anybody. He then says that he takes stupid risks just to get more cash, and that the death of his brother had an irreparable mental damage to him. To sum, J. Cole says in his verse that he wants money over pleasure or "smoke" and that he is the underdog and is by himself against the odds.
