Florence + the Machine: Spectrum (Say My Name) Meaning
Song Released: 2012
Spectrum (Say My Name) Lyrics
-
As of recent these lyrics have illustrated a deeper meaning of racial, religious, and cultural inequality and civil unrest. "When we first came here, we were cold and we were clear", references when we are born we are clean slates, crystal clear, not tainted by the world, "with no colors on our skin, we were light and paper thin". We are untainted by the world un "Till you let the spectrum in", then we are divided. Victims of this division, those who have suffered from injustices or death, because of race, sex, creed, or religion, are the silent army. "Say my name, and every color illuminates", saying those victims names reminds us of these injustices and that we are all the same clear light underneath our beliefs or appearances. All colors are illuminated when light is cast through a prism. When we are unified by Love, "we are shining and we will never be afraid again". Even if we need to resurrect the silent army or victims to keep reminding us that we were all created equal. "And when we come back we'll be dressed in black
And you'll scream our names aloud
And we won't eat and we won't sleep
We'll drag bodies from their graves.
