John Mayer: Split Screen Sadness Meaning
Split Screen Sadness Lyrics
-
"Maybe I'll sleep inside my coat,
and wait on your porch 'til you come back home alright."
Mayer is waiting for a call, an arrival, a sign, anything that will tell him that the girl he had broken up with will come back.
"So I'll check the weather wherever you are,
'cause I wonder if you can see the stars tonight."
He worries about her, how she's doing, if she can see the same stars he sees. He probably imagines she's taking the breakup as hard as he is. "We share a sadness, split screen sadness."
"And I can't wait to figure out what's wrong with me,
so I can say this is the way that I used to be.
There's no substitute for time."
Mayer, as he says in songs like "Half of My Heart," seems to have troubles giving his entire self to somebody he loves, and probably wishes here that he could look back on what he could have done better so that when he goes into a relationship, he can be less fearful of whether it might end.
