Lana Del Rey: Black Beauty Meaning
Song Released: 2014
Black Beauty Lyrics
I dye my hair a darker shade of brown
'Cause you like your women Spanish, dark, strong, and proud
I paint the sky black
You said if you could have your way, you'd make it nighttime all today
So it'd suit the mood...

This song is about loving somebody who may be struggling with depression, or have other things making them sad. Lana is changing herself for this person, but she doesn't want them to be so sad.
I paint my nails black, I dye my hair a darker shade of brown, cause you like your women Spanish, dark strong and proud, I paint the sky black. (She is in love with a saddened and troubled person and she is attempting to get them to love her back, and she feels the only way to do that is to be more like them, metaphorically "black" meaning dark)
You said if you could have your way, you'd make the nighttime all the day, so it'd suit the mood of your soul. (More proof that all the references to the color black in this song is a metaphor for being dark, sad, and troubled)
Oh, what can I do? Nothing, my sparrow blue. Oh, what can I do? Life is beautiful but you don't have a clue. Sun and ocean blue, that magnificence, it don't make sense to you. Black beauty, oh, black beauty, oh. (These lyrics mean she wants her love to be happy and see the good and beauty in life, but she doesn't know what to do)
I paint the house black. My wedding dress, black leather too. You have no room for light. Love is lost on you. (More lyrics about the sadness of her lover, and how she's willing to change to be their everything)
I keep my lips red to seem like cherries into spring. Darling, you can't let everything seem so dark blue. (To me, the red lips are a metaphor of the way she's changing herself to a darker person for somebody's love and admiration, but through all of that darkness, she still only wants them to be happy)
But oh, what can I do to turn you on or get through you? (Showing confusion as to what she has to do for them to love her, even though she'd rather have them be happy than become like them herself)
