This song was written in honor of Robert Plant's dog. "Aint no companion like a blue eyed merle" Sounds like girl if your mind is set to thinking its about a woman but a merle is the breed of the dog Plant owned. Whenever he sang this song live he would always end it by calling out his dog's name "Strider" (obviously named after LOTR character ;))

The song was about the memories a former pet owner (as imagined by the band) of a mummified black dog found in a summer cottage that was used by Robert plants family in the 50's later bought by Robert Plant. for the band to rehearse and write music. the cottage had no utilities to speak of. you think the song is about a woman but it is about a dog it's a funny twist.
