Panic! At The Disco: I Wanna Be Free Meaning
I Wanna Be Free Lyrics
I can feel its vital signs
The beat goes dry, and the spirit dies
(Ohhhhh)
I wanna dig this Tinseltown til it's six feet underground
It's safe to say that timing is everything (is everything)
I wanna be...
-
Brendon is singing about Ryan leaving. "Is there a heart inside the night
I can feel its vital signs
The beat goes dry, and the spirit dies." I'm so pained, that I feel like I am dying.
"I wanna dig this Tinseltown til it's six feet underground
It's safe to say that timing is everything" I want to dig my grave because you left, that's obviously why I am upset.
"I wanna be free, I wanna be loved
I wanna be more than you're thinking of
Everything seems to be estranged when you're alone." I don't want to feel sad anymore, I want you to be here with me, it's weird/upsetting not having you still here.
"Played our parts and covered ground
Drowned our sorrows, laid em' down
My memory is keeping the effigy." We made this band together, and we shared sorrows, and then dropped it all when you left. My memory is keeping us as a statue(effigy) in my mind.
"One day I'll stop keeping track
And give myself time to react
One day, one day." I'll stop thinking about this and being sad, eventually, but not yet. -
This song is about the disconnect someone feels when they don't have another person in their life. "everything seems to be estranged when your alone". And it's about wanting to feel connected again and wanting to be in another relationship. I also think the bit in the bridge about " one day I'll stop keeping track" might be talking about an ex. Like the speaker feels alienated and alone because they are not in a relationship, and because they are alone they think about past relationships, and maybe even exaggerating how good it used to be "my memory is keeping the effigy." the speaker wants to stop thinking about the ex by getting into a relationship with someone else "is there a heart inside the night?" but not finding anything and losing hope "I can feel its vital signs the beat goes dry and the spirit dies"
