Europa and the Pirate Twins Lyrics

I was fourteen
She Was Twelve
Father travelled
Hers as well
Europa
Down the beaches
Hand in hand
Twelfth of never on the sand
Then war took her away
We swore a vow that day:
We'll be the Pirate Twins again, Europa
Oh my country,...

The first part of the song is based on Thomas DOlby's real life childhood. The second half is merelky a fantasy.

Thomaas Dolby's father was a professor of classical art. When Dolby was a child, his father took him and his family to places like Greece and Italy to study ancient art and architecture.

During a long stay in Greece, young Thomas became very friendly with a Greek girl. They started out as pals, playing games (like pretending to be pirates) together on the beach. Later, they started to form their first major crushes on each other. But eventually, Dolby's family moved back to England. They promised they'd stay in touch, that they'd always be true to each other... but they never saw each other again, and gradually lost contact completely.

But years later, Dolby still remembered that girl, and imagined her becoming a big star, a glamorous singer and actress. He imagined trying to see her, but getting pushed aside by the paparazzi and her bodyguards.
