Toby is thinking about a girl he met in high school who he must've liked a lot because he said he was crazy enough to write her name and number on the football field(I was always the crazy one broke into the stadium and I wrote your number on the 50-yard line). The girl was smart because she was valedictorian(You were always the perfect one the valedictorian)and she must have been a fun person because he also wrote to call her if you wanted to have a good time (So under your number I wrote call for a good time). She never liked him but he always was trying to make her notice him(I always wanted to get your attention but you overlooked me somehow)and she went through a lot of boyfriends(Besides you had too many boyfriends to mention). Toby was a musician, guitar, and she didn't like musicians(And I played my guitar too loud). Toby moved, but she still wanted him to hurt(When I took off to Tennessee I heard that you made fun of me). She got married to a rich guy but he ruined her dreams of having a perfect marriage(Then you married into money girl ain't it a cruel and funny world he took your dreams and he tore them apart). Her husband doesn't come home, maybe cheating, and she cries a lot(He never comes home and you're always alone and your kids hear you cry down the hall). One morning she wakes up to her alarm clock and one of Toby's songs is playing(Alarm clock starts ringing who could that be singing it's me baby with your wake-up call). The choruses say that he's asking her if, now that he's a big-time star, if she still thinks he's nuts and he's telling her that he tried so hard to get her to love him but he couldn't. He also says that it was his dream to be a famous singer and guitar player, that he always dreamed of being on the radio.
