Willie Nelson: Seven Spanish Angels Meaning
Song Released: 1985
Seven Spanish Angels Lyrics
And said "say a prayer for me"
She threw her arms around him
Whispered, "God will keep us free"
They could hear the riders comin'
He said, "this is my last fight
If they take me back to Texas
They won't...

I didn't research this song until now, but have listened to it for many years. I've always been a little confused about the seven Spanish Angels reference. The more I listen to the song the more I think it was about runaway slaves that escape Texas into Mexico and are perused by a posse to capture them and bring them back. If you listen to the song with that in mind I believe this black man dies fighting for he and his wives freedom. She whispers God will keep us free. It's a tragic tail and she's not going back without him, so she makes a stand knowing she's facing her death to be with him forever free with God's grace. It chokes me up every time. It's a beautiful song though I wish they could have gotten away to live in peace. God bless them.

I was always of the understanding, along with other people, that the song Seven Spanish Angels was based on a real story, and in fact, that the seven Spanish angels were nuns, I have searched the internet but cannot find an answer. My dear cousin had this song played at his funeral. Very moving for everyone. I would be very interested to hear from anyone who knows the true story. Recieved should be spelled "received"

Man, who is a wanted man, and presumably wife or girlfriend are trapped with a posse after them. A gunfight insues and the man is killed. The woman picks up his still smoking gun to kill herself knowing the gun was empty and recieved her wish when the posse shot her as well.
In, I forget which story or ledgend, 7 angles decend from heaven to bring the soul of the one who has died back to heaven.
