Kelly Clarkson: Because of You Meaning

Album cover for Because of You album cover

Song Released: 2005

Because of You Lyrics

I will not make the same mistakes that you did
I will not let myself
Cause my heart so much misery
I will not break the way you did, when
You fell so hard
I've learned the hard way
To never let it get that far

Because of you
I never...

I can tell you exactically what the song is about because I heard it from the horses mouth. At Kelly's "Behind These Hazel Eyes" concert, I was able to go backstage and see Kelly. When I asked her what (my favorite song) Because of You was about, she told me that she wrote it when she was 16, and it was "sort of a diary entry at first". She said that she comes from a broken family, like many children around America, and she wrote it about her parents divorce. She also commented that she doesn't think that adults realize the effect divorce has on children. She told me that she didn't want anyone to think she was sad or depressed - that writing the song was the way she got over the depression of her parents divorce. She'd gotten a lot of fanmail regarding the topic of divorce, and she said that she thoguht maybe God had her write the song in hopes that children who were dealing with the issue of divorce could relate to it; and, that the song could possibily help them like it helped her. She also said (in an interview - not to me this time) that she discussed releasing the song with her family and, although the song covers a painful territory, they also thoguht the song was better to be out -possibily helping people, than stuck in some notebook. Anyways, hopefully that helps.

"Because of You" is about the negative legacies parents leave their children with. They enforce their ideas and bad experiences they've had on their kids without realising the true impact of their words. It's about the vulnerability they create within their children. It's about the way Kelly has been influenced by her mother leaning on her in a way that a child shouldn't have to deal with. I believe Kelly wrote this song for the future generations when we have children. To make people understand the true impact their words have on their children and to tell us it's not ok; kids need stability and encouragement to go out and experience things for ourselves.

What this song actually applies to is Kelly's family. Her father left her and her mother when she was younger, and she talks about it in the song.

Song has a different interpretation for each person.

For the recent post, I think you should sell the real estate of your heart. She ended it many years ago and it has been seven years and you guys are no longer together. As you said, respect her wishes and stay away.

This is a good lesson for everyone. If someone ended a relationship and they told their wishes. Respect it and stay away. It's also a good lesson for me with regards to those people who ended their relationship to me as friends. I respect their wishes and I am now staying away.

Hope you find the right buyer for the real estate of your heart. You better sell it because your ex-gf has already ended her relationship with you.

For me this song applies to a situation very different than intended. I had the perfect relationship with the perfect woman for me. She ended it because of something having to go with my work. No, I wasn't cheating on her. She was with me when the situation happened. Evfn though she knew about my line of work, and I always did my best to keep her from being involved, one day and completely unavoidable, she saw something that couldn't be unseen. The relationship lasted 8 years. I'd have done anything for her. I gave her anything she wanted or needed. While I did give her material objects, I'm talking about the important relationship things; I made a lot of time for her, listened to her without trying to fix it for her (unless asked), made myself available for her when she needed, the list is extensive. I can't date someone else because she takes up real estate in my heart. It's been 7 years and she is still the only one with whom I want to be. But, I respect her wishes and stay away. As she says in her song, my heart can't possibly break.... mine can't because it's already broken. The rest just follows, because of her.

When I wrote the song to my boyfriend name George I want to send it to him and wrote it with Jonas brothers but when I started this song to help and I would ask him to be my boyfriend he said yeah, he will definitely marry me, it make me happy to date him. He’s British, he’s so nice and charming and he also has a sister, Charlotte, she looked like me, and so she had blue eyes like her dad.

When I felt the same way did Kelly Clarkson because it felt like different emotions because this song is emotional and so when I find someone to support me, I would ask a friend to give me a hug before I started crying but I’m fine, it had hard time to figure this out, but my producer Nathan Chapman told me to put that song on our record then I’m done my friend Shawn helped me with the schedule for me, and wrote it.

I hadn't hear this song in a very long time. I remember first time I heard it . I cried so hard , and still do when I hear it. For me personally, it is all the feelings and the way I lived and live in some areas of my life . My father and brother molested me. These words are mine .

There aren't many songs I can relate to. This one however is a song that makes me relive my past again and realize where my problems come from.

My parents divorced when I was 13. My mother fell into depression and wasn't able to take care of me and my 11 year old sister so I did myself.
She leaned on me, forgetting that she wasn't the only one who was hurt.

Now I'm 20 years old and suffer from depression and a schizoid personality disorder. I can't show emotions and I don't trust anyone to let them see the real me.
I learnt to be strong the hard way, keeping myself distant from others so I don't have to go through the same as my mother back then.

She never realized that the weight she put on me broke me down mentally and now she says I don't have the right to have depression as I had a 'good childhood'.

Because of you touches me deep within in my heart and I can finally feel something. This song brings out emotions in me i hold back for so long. It's like I can finally breathe again and let it all out.

    I don't feel alone anymore.

I can relate to this song on so many levels. To me, it reveals the pain she had dealing with her parent's divorce and how hard Kelly's mother dealt with it...And how deeply affected Kelly was, having to fend for herself...Emotionally and physically and was so alone.

Not only did she not have her father anymore, she didn't have her mother's support that a child needs at that time.

Instead she had to deal with the emotional weight of her mother's sadness and pain, which bordered on neglect and the dysfunctional way her mother dealt with all of that and watch her mother fall apart,

It also shows how that time and experience in her life had deeply effected how Kelly dealt with her own adult relationships, and her faith she lost in relationships and marriage, affecting Kelly as a young woman and into her adulthood.

When I first heard this song on the radio years ago, I had no idea that it was about a traumatic family situation. For me, it was about a young girl who had a boyfriend who was going through a rough time and all his anguish and mental anxiety seeped into the relationship, so that she was always having to try and put him back together again. I thought that he must have taken much of his anger out on her because she says that she finds it hard to trust anyone else. This was hard for her because it was her first relationship and couldn't handle his problems and the fact that he relied too much on her. There's a line in their where she says, "I cry every night for same damn thing" which I heard as "I cry every night because I see your pain". And, as a more mature woman, she sings about feeling empty because the best years of her life were wasted on this guy. Years later, I heard a girl relate to the song because of neglect from her father, and I was shocked that it could have a different meaning. And seeing the music video now, we can clearly see things from Kelly's perspective. It just goes to show that two people can have a completely different take on an artist's work.

Clarkson originally wrote "Because of You" when she was 16 years old as a means of coping with the emotional distress caused by the divorce of her parents.[4] She wrote the lyrics of the song in less than 25 minutes.[5]

One more comment to Ms. Peltier. Kelly Clarkson did not "slander" her parents as you accused in your comment.

First of all, she doesn't reference anybody in the song, and so it could be about anyone. She has said publicly it's about a "dysfunctional family." It is other people who have surmised that it is about her mother.

Even if she has publicly stated that the song is about her mother, the first and most powerful defense of slander is truth. Kelly has a right to write about her life experiences. Writers have been doing that since the beginning of time. Scripture is full of life experiences and some of them are very bad. Do you accuse God of slander?

Before you wrote so angrily of how Kelly should go to her mother and mend fences and all the things that you said, you probably should have researched the situation and written out of knowledge instead of ignorance. Had you done so, you would have found, as I did, that they have maintained a happy, loving relationship for many years now.

This comment is in response to Mary Peltier. Ms. Peltier, I'm a 56-year-old woman who is a wife, mother and grandmother, and I'm a lifelong Christian who is devoted to my faith.

I am saddened by your put down of this song as somehow being in violation of God's commandment to us to honor our fathers and mothers. I find absolutely nothing in this song by Kelly Clarkson that dishonors her parents.

We can honor our parents and still be honest about the pain their decisions caused us as children. Honoring your parents doesn't mean sticking your head in the sand and keeping your feelings hidden.

Clarkson is simply took the pain she experienced as a child and used it to help others going through similar situations. I don't see disrespect in that, I see Christ in that.

From everything that I've read, Clarkson's relationship with her mother is excellent now and whatever pain was there has been healed. That she experienced so much pain at the hands of her mother and they now have a loving relationship is a testament to the power of forgiveness, something that Christ teaches us to do.

I relate to this song because of the pain my own mother caused me as a child. She was extraordinarily critical and the second verse of the song rips my heart out. However, I love my my mother very much and forgave her years ago. She and I have a wonderful relationship.

You know, Ms. Peltier, when Christians are unnecessarily harsh in their judgments of other people, it really makes it hard on the rest of us who are trying to live godly lives and share the love of Christ with other people.
