Snow Patrol: Run Meaning
Run Lyrics
Then we really have to go
You've been the only thing that's right
In all I've done
And I can barely look at you
But every single time I do
I know we'll make it anywhere
Away from here
Light up, light...

#1 top rated interpretation:this song struck my heart when i first listened to it because about 2 months ago, right before my 23 year old cousin died, he spent that day almost in a coma-like state except he was concious. he could hear us but he couldnt communicate with us--he was too weak.
not long after he died, i heard this song and i broke down into tears when i listened to the lyrics:
"Light up, light up
As if you have a choice
Even if you cannot hear my voice
I'll be right beside you dear"
this, to me, describes how my family struggled to maintain hope during that time. really the only thing we could do was try to keep our sprits up "as if we had a choice"...we never left his side although he couldnt communicate with us any longer, we wanted to be sure he knew we were with him.
Louder, louder
And we'll run for our lives
I can hardly speak I understand
Why you can't raise your voice to say
To think I might not see those eyes
Makes it so hard not to cry
And as we say our long goodbye
I nearly do
no song besides this describes my feelings that day as i watched my dear young cousin dying. -

#2 top rated interpretation:I see this as a long running relationship that just isn't working despite a lot of love between the two people involved. Eventually this goodbye that has taken years to finally end is upon them.
I'll be right beside you dear- I will never stop loving you. If we could escape whatevery reality that stands between us, we would make it, but for whatever reason it just isn't possible for these two people to escape, maybe there are other people involved that make it not the right thing to do.
So life has to go on, it is an epic goodbye, clinging to one another is ruining their lives, so they will run for their lives and it will be ok.
A song about real love, love that cannot work at that time and the only right thing to do is to say goodbye. -

#3 top rated interpretation:The song was written by Gary Lightbody after he fell down the stairs and was recovering at home with his family. He says it was a dark time for him and the song is about family and how we are protected by our families and in turn protect them whatever the situation, tragedy or challenge. It's a very uplifting song with a real feeling of tragedy and gloom giving way to the most positive and uplifting chorus. Not only is it a good song the lyrics ring true in lots of situations because it's based on the simple truth that we are all loved in some way.
-
I believe the lyrics were trying to warn us about what is coming...
It's about awakening to the corruption, greed and control in our world, and about the events we are now experiencing today.
It's about survival and truth, love and integrity, unity and commitment to each other, and the strength of humanity.
Metaphors to send a message, as are in so many songs and films recently. -
A man singing to his wife or girl friend in a coma dying and that he' ll be there with her til shes gone.
-
Separation of two people who really love each other..stay positive even when we are not together is the message of the first part of the chorus. First stanza is so sad, brought out by the minimalism of the lyrics and Gary's haunting voice. They are so moved that they can't speak. How can l make this easier for us is a concern, motivated by the complexity of their situation and his love and compassion for his lover.

This song hits like no other song for those watching a part of their heart suffering at the end of mental illness, brain cancer, and victims of stroke.
I was afraid. I want to run. This is not the way they are. Why can’t they open their eyes? Why you can’t raise your voice to say...
And in the end you can’t run because “ to think I might not see those eyes” so you stay by their side and cry for them to light up again.
Also true for watching Dementia.
I have seen all the above with my own heart. I am an orphan to a few of the above. I have lost to all of them. This song... -
My love used to love this song, whenever he hears tis e will just shut his eyes and feel this song and get a teary eye. I always wonder why and I even asked him he will always just say that the song made him feel sad. My love is a married guy and we dated for 7 years until it's time to say goodbye to make what is right for the sake of his kids. He flew back to UK with his family and I left behind. He was the very first man I've had in my life so it was hard to move on. I stopped listening to this song too. But we stay friends for another for years, it's like we are still lover in long distance but not. Until last May 23rd he passed away due to covid, then I hear this song again all of a sudden it feels like he's singing it for me it makes me break down and cry.
-
I think it’s about a person/relative/parent dying from lung cancer.
Almost condescendingly saying - light up your cigarette (i.e. on you go then, kill yourself somemore)... “as if you had a choice” (nicotine addiction). -
My hubby died from cancer. While he lay in hospital recovering from surgery he was in there 7 weeks and missed his music. I brought in our Snow Patrol album. We lay beside eachother, sharing headphones and listening to this track. The Nurses walked by and closed the curtains for us....
-
I have dedicated this song to my adult daughter who is fighting addiction. I want to take my hand and run with me out of her situation -- to light up again -- run for her life. But, I am helpless. And my heart is heavy every time we say goodbye.

This song, i can only inexorably express how much sentiment it indulges deep into my soul.
The subtle words of surreal fondness and deep attachment to the party in question are presented.
He gently unfolds tender heartfelt emotions for this person.
Words fail at my being awed by this song -
The song lyrics and their interpretation will be many
for me it is simply a most beautifully written song.
Especially for anyone in my situation who is living each day knowing that the one most dear to them is dying.
The words can be interpreted as being from the person dying to the partner he or she is leaving behind.
Or vice versa from the person left behind to the the partner whom has now or will soon be gone from his or her life.
There is sadness and compassion in the lyrics,so much so that it leaves one with a feeling of hope and comfort in that you will reunited with those you love even after death.
To always be beside the ones you love -
I love this song, i think its about encouraging someone who has lost a loved one, reminding them that they will always be a part of their life and to stay strong. I have it written into my will that this song will be played at my funeral.

My son had just taken his life by suicide. when I heard this song I thought of him on life support in the ICU. I wanted him to wake up - to light up - I hoped he could hear my prayers that he would come back to life. His eyes were shut yet I hoped he could hear me that I had always been and always would be by his side. It was so hard to finally say goodbye when he passed. I bought a plot next to his so I could be near him in the next life. This song still brings tears to my eyes.
-
This song hits me emotionally every time I feel a nerve of overwhelming sadness...
But poetically it's purely beautiful. -
My personal experience is very often the person that will tell you to run , loves you so much that they are not going to run...they will stand against unsurmountable odds...so you will have a chance. Even though this will result in their certain death....hence Victoria Crosses being awarded.
