Tonight and the Rest of My Life Lyrics

Down to the earth I fell
With dripping wings
Heavy things won't fly
And the sky might catch on fire
And burn the axis of the world
That's why I prefer a sunless sky
To the glittering and stinging in my eyes

[Chorus:]
I feel so...

The legend of Icarus comes to mind. The similarities are hard to ignore..”dripping wings, falling into the ocean, and drowning”. It’s a haunting song

Definitely a spiritual song not a love song. I connect with this song perfectly, it gives me shivers.

When this song first came out Nina did an interview where she said that the song was about giving birth to her first child. Which completely blew my interpretation that it was about making love to someone extremely special out of the water.

I think this is about the experience of dying and transitioning from the body. Traveling from life to death and experiencing life after death.

I agree with the foregoing interpretation in that the song's speaker has a spiritual connection. But the connection she has is with God, not a lover, per se. Hence the allusions to Revelation (and classical mythology / Icarus / etc.). Peace.

'Tonight and the rest of my life' is about never wanting to lose the person you love.
In the first stanza of the song she describes the revelations chapter in the bible..Basically the end of the world "and the sky might catch on fire and burn the axis of the world" because she'd rather the world end than the pain of losing the one she loves " that why I prefer a sunless sky to the glittering and stinging in my eyes"..The "glittering and stinging in my eyes" refers to the painful tears. So then the chorus is about suspending a moment in time with her lover who'd be something like a soulmate, this can be seen in the spiritual connection she feels when they are together "I feel so light ..Weightlessness is passing over me".

So basically, she has a spiritual/soul mate connection with the one she loves who means the "universe" to her, however because of this spiritual connection losing the world would not be as bad as losing him because they can meet again once they die due to the fact that they are soulmates.
