I think that the song says that certain people in the world study the past to much and look at all of the bad things that have happened. Stevie mentions much negatively meaning words after those lines and says confirmation to the evils of the world. Then he says how everyone should look to the future. I think that future paradise is actually heaven and we should be giving all of our time to fixing the world instead of focusing on all of the bad things that have already happened. then he uses positive words and some terms from the bible such as revelations.

It goes about people that are living their life in history/nostalgia, while the actual life is waisted. He says to the people, don't look behind but look forward, while taking into account how dificult it was (especially for black citizens).
