It's about loving someone who's been hurt so badly that it affects everything in their life... maybe rape? As a survivor of rape I identify so much with this song and just knowing that there are guys out there who want to hold you until the hurt is gone keeps me alive sometimes. He's trying to portray that... that it's OK to be broken and maybe two broken people can make each other whole.
