Boomtown Rats: I Don't Like Mondays Meaning
I Don't Like Mondays Lyrics
gets switched to overload
and nobody's gonna go to school today
she's gonna make them stay at home
And Daddy doesn't understand it
He always said she was good as gold
And he can see no reason
Cos there are...

This song was inspired by a real life incident on Jan 29, 1979 which a 16 year old girl living across from an elementary school in San Diego Cal sniped the school yard killing 3 adults and wounding 8 defenseless children. The reason she gave was "I don't like Mondays". The girl, Brenda Ann Spencer, is still in prison because of it.

How expectations met in the past become self imposed pressures
those self imposed pressures create animosity toward those not
aware of the torture awaiting them or the pressure they feel inside
that never sees the light of day unless something that seems so loving
turns deeply unforgivable
the happy go lucky sounds of joy in a playground, yelling screaming
hollering hooting and hollering, the crying and the reassuring adult
noises of awwws and its okays lets go over here and remember its polite
to share and keep your hands to your selves
grandma just got her facelift and wanted to be a socialite while we were away
grandpa was a vet and he was 'ill' and decided to stay home
I was a kid going through the fresh start and feeling all the awkwardness of
wanting to feel and yet being told by so many how it was sacred and the possible
effects of a new bing being enlarged into reality and being told you are the
nicest boy and yet being offered by several girls to do them favors,
grandma was out and I had a new cosmo, the colors were amazing and I intensified and
grandma was out and I had some cream, what if that girl that wanted me in her room
came to my window right now, is that so wrong, I could show her what I was thinking
grandma was out, and I had a feeling that was excellent because I created the moment
and grandma wanted in on the action, but I would not allow it and kept my moment to
myself and the cries from outside the knocking and the pounding saying let me
in and I would not budge, threats of getting the police and I will be back and the
crying and the sobbing cries of open the door and let me in ... I went to sleep, put
on my headphones and fell asleep, grandma got inside and was bewildered as to what
happened, the suited authorities were concerned by my inactions and 'thought process',
actually felt some guilt even though I was 'oblivious' because that cosmo was so great -
This song was written by lead singer Bob Geldoff (Live 8, played Pink in The Wall.) He wrote it after hearing news of a girl who shot up an elementary school across the street from her house. When questioned by reporters "tell me whyyyy??!!!" she replied that monday was such a boring day and that this livened up the day. "I dont like mondaaaayyys..."
The song barely charted here in the land o' milk and honey because it hit so close to home.
