Songs about Memphis
Memphis, Tennessee just seems to have hit the cultural jackpot. It lucked out with a name that's easy to stick into lyrics. It's practically the birthplace of rock and roll, and a handful of related genres besides. It's the city where legendary musicians got their big break into show biz. It's home to Stax Records and the legendary Sam Phillips' Sun Studio. Beside that point, it's also a cradle of the American heartland. Many a uniquely American road story begins or ends there.
So it's no surprise that there's so many songs that mention Memphis. Quite a few singers, perhaps, have a superstitious motivation to insert the name of the city into their songs, hoping some of that Memphis magic rubs off.
