Breakfast at Tiffany's Lyrics

You'll say that we've got nothing in common
No common ground to start from
And we're falling apart
You'll say the world has come between us
Our lives have come between us
Still I know you just don't care

CHORUS:
And I said, "What about...

Breakfast at Tiffany's...the movie starring Audrey Hepburn featured an expensive jewellery shop called "Tiffany's". Surely the guy in the song is making that last attempt to keep his girl by asking her to marry him with a big hint at going to Tiffany's for the ring...

This song is about a guy's last ditch effort to salvage the relationship with his girl. The girl is the 'doubter' here, as is apparent within the lines "You'll say we've got nothing in common", "the world has come between us", and "Still I know you just don't care". The chorus brings out the singer's genuine effort in the best possible way- not only in the lyrics, but also in the rhythm.
The lyrics in combination with the chords just resonate a sense of success because we all know..even if she didn't say yes, he just delivered the smoothest line in an attempt to get her to stay(which is an accomplishment within itself). Asking about her interest in something as trivial as a movie they both saw characterizes this singer as someone who is honestly attached to his girl, and it makes this simple verse carry so much weight.
The second verse is pretty much reiterating his fondness for her, but he's realizing his previous beliefs in her were misplaced as she apparently never felt that way towards him. He then asks "So what now? It's plain to see we're over...and so much is left undone".
By now the guy has pretty much accepted that she's gone, but he does still express his interest in 'what might have been' because "so much is left undone"; but then he jumps right back into an three-dose chorus, being persistent in his goal right up to the end.
I didn't really think about this when I started typing this interpretation, but I guess this song can have an even deeper message behind its very arrangement- be persistent. Don't give up. Take that chance, even in the face of failure- it might be your last one. Then at the end of the day you can at least walk away saying "Yeah, it didn't work out for me this time, but at least I did everything I could."
