when she was in high school she went to an all girls school and was bullied. she would see other people watching it and saw that they wanted to do something but wouldn't. these peeople were 'caught in the croud', they followed peer prsure. when she saw this she decided to write a song about it but instead turn the story around. she made it so that she was watching and being 'caught in the croud'. this influenced people to stop watching and start doing.

It's about being the popular likeable person who talks to everyone even if they're a bit different. But when push comes to shove, when the 'unpopular' or 'bullied' friend needs you the most, you follow the 'in' crowd and turn your back. You go along with the 'bullies' by walking away and not standing up for them. You get 'caught in the crowd' but you lose a true friend in the process. She didn't realise until she was older and wiser that she betrayed a friend and if she could go back she would have acted differently. IE Stood up for her friend, helped them when they needed her and in the process become friends for life.
