Mae: Suspension Meaning
Suspension Lyrics
and lately I'm not scared
I've figured out,
that what you do to me feels like
I'm floating on air.
I don't need to know right now
all I know is I believe
in the very thing that got us here
and now I can't leave.
Say...
-
(Still second verse)
"and I'll take what I can get.
If you want me here (If you want me here)"
I wasn't that confused by this line. When he says "I'll take" it may mean he will accept any way she wants to see him. Maybe she wants to start something. She may also just want to be friends. She may not even want anything.
"If you want me here"
He might want to drop EVERYTHING if she doesn't want him "here". No point in falling for someone who doesn't feel the same way.
(Second chorus)
"Say anything, but say what you mean.
When you whisper you want this
your eyes tell the same.
We are gaining speed
I can barely breathe.
Cause I'm caught in suspension"
You may want to consider that there is no official relationship. They can just be involved with each other not knowing how the other person feels but they have some sort of idea. By "Gaining speed" things start to actually get real. Like a point of no return. He's caught in "suspension".
"It's enough for me to get excited,
It's enough for me to feel...Oh!"
Yeah, It's just more of an explanation on how he feels.
I'm going through something like this. Girl I fell incredibly hard for likes me back. She didn't say anything until 2 weeks before going away to college. So it's like, "well now what?" I'm stuck wondering if she's over me or still holding on. I know I'm still ridiculously crushing on her and can't get over her (at least not anytime soon). I need to know how she feels.
Go re-listen to the song as if you were in my situation. The lyrics make perfect sense. -
This is a really cool song. I could use some help with interpreting it but so far, this is what I've figured out:
(From the first verse)
"Lately I'm alright
and lately I'm not scared
I've figured out,
that what you do to me feels like
I'm floating on air."
>Here the writer explains that initially, he was probably confused about what he felt towards a particular girl. This is a typical feeling that comes with the process of love---first you're confused and you can't understand yourself then it slowly starts to sink in.
(still first verse)
"I don't need to know right now
all I know is I believe
in the very thing that got us here
and now I can't leave."
>What he's probably referring to in the line "I don't need to know right now" is the reasons behind the feelings he has for the girl. He's not exactly sure why he feels that way but as the next lines say, he believes in the thing that got them there (whatever it is...it sounds pretty relative and personal). I'm not sure but I'm open to corrections.
(1st chorus)
"Say anything, but say what you mean,
cause I'm caught in suspension."
In the first chorus, the word "suspension" seems to bear a different meaning. Considering that the first verse was all about realizing that he's in love and that the last line of the verse ("and now I can't leave") suggests a confession of his feelings or a confrontation with the girl, I think the first chorus depicts the scenario when the writer tells the girl he loves her. Of course, he wants to know if the feeling is mutual so he tells her to "say anything, but say what you mean". The line "cause I'm caught in suspension" means that he's in a state in which the answer he's seeking from the girl is being withheld from him and he just wants her to say what she feels.
(Second verse)
"Now,
I'm wanting this for sure
and I'll beg for nothing more.
I'll plan all day and drive all night
you'll love what's in store."
>Here the writer is somewhat infatuated ("I'll plan all day and drive all night") about the girl---again, something typical in the process of love. No lines imply that the girl returned his affection in this verse, so the verse depicts the writer trying to figure out how to woo the girl. His feelings for her continue to intensify.
(Still second verse)
"I can't seem to stop this now
even if it's not so clear..."
>In relation to the first verse (where the writer admits he doesn't exactly know why he feels that way for the girl), he again admits that he still hasn't resolved that matter but he is too caught up in his feelings to stop and ponder over the issue at hand.
(Still second verse)
"and I'll take what I can get.
If you want me here (If you want me here)"
>This is the part that confuses me. I'm not sure what the writer plans to "take" in the first line. I think the writer considered the possibility that the girl might not even like him (like I said, I don't think there was a line that states the girl returned his affection). Perhaps he's trying to say that if the girl does like him in return ("If you want me here"), he'll take with him whatever he can gain from his experiences with the girl in a mutual relationship (that is, if she "wants him here").
(Second chorus)
"Say anything, but say what you mean.
When you whisper you want this
your eyes tell the same.
We are gaining speed
I can barely breathe.
Cause I'm caught in suspension"
>I'm not sure about this part either.
The second and third lines of the chorus imply that the girl likes him back. However, the writer is trying to say that he still has some doubts about their relationship, especially the girl (which is why he continues to tell her "say WHAT YOU MEAN"). The "gaining speed" part of the next line confuses the hell out of me. Maybe it means their relationship is going way too fast for him (hence his doubts about the girl, considering she took quite a while to return his affection and all). The word "suspension" takes a different meaning in this chorus. It could mean that because of his doubts, he suddenly stops/becomes inactive for a certain period of time because their relationship is going too fast and his doubts have remained unresolved. It could also be implying that again, the writer is too caught up in his feelings and he fails to address his doubts and confusions regarding their relationship. He is "caught in suspension" in the sense that he's being kept from falling/sinking (pondering over his doubts and realizing something wrong with their relationship) by an invisible support (his feelings and his infatuation). This goes in connection with the line "What you do to me feels like I'm floating on air." (from the 1st verse) in which the line may indirectly mean that he gets caught up in his emotions easily. Again, I'm not sure.
(Finally, the bridge)
"It's enough for me to get excited,
It's enough for me to feel...Oh!"
>This is weird, too. I think it might be just another expression of how caught up he is with his feelings (with getting excited and all, and then he eventually fails to find the words to explain and he just settles with a long "Oh!" in the second line).
That's about it. I'd appreciate some help with the confusing parts.
