If I remember correctly, I believe this song was written for friends in ministry who were leaving Michael W. Smith's home church for a ministry opportunity God was leading them to in Jackson,MS.

Sounds like he’s singing to a girlfriend at the time of their breakup. He obviously still loves her and hopes that their love will withstand their separation and be reignited in the future. The themes of love (“love will be the tie that binds us”), great memories (“memories will be our souvenir”), and future dreams (“will bring us back around again”) are prominent throughout this moving, emotionally-charged song.
