Mike Oldfield: Moonlight Shadow Meaning
Moonlight Shadow Lyrics
He passed on worried and wanting, carried away by a moonlight shadow
Lost in a river last Saturday night, far away on the other side
He was caught in the middle of a desperate...
-
The singer is the best friend of the wife of the man killed "on the other side" as he was coming home. Her friend could not "push through" and committed suicide. The singer is lamenting and praying for her friends. Wondering how something so devastating can happen so quickly and silently as unnoticed as a "Moonlight Shadow."

The first time I heard this song and saw the video back in the 80's, I immediately thought it had something to do with the American Civil war. It looked like it could have been set in the southern U.S. The battlefields were often on farmlands and plantation grounds. I thought the woman in the video had had a premonition that the man she loved was about to be killed. Maybe he wasn't even a soldier, but was close to the fight. The man on the run could have been a deserter. Caught in the middle of 105? The 105th army regiment maybe? I've always loved the song even though it's terribly sad.
