Copied this from elsewhere, but tis good:

I believe that in this song Nick is more expressing his loneliness and his desire to make more connections with more people. The shed is essentially his psyche and he is saying how he can be depressed a lot of times or there are extremely deep things on his mind. He sees other people who most of the time either aren't concerned with some of the things hes concerned about yet, or simply just would never have the emotional capacity to fill their heads with some of the things he does, or even more simply are just plain happy. He uses their psyches as a mansion (or a house big and grand) in direct comparison with his mental shed. When you think of a mansion most of the time it is filled with a lot of things, but thats all they will ever be. In a shed it can be thought of as a lot cozier, and having more meaningful things inside. The point that he is trying to get across in this song is that even though that may be true, and may look apparent he really wants to make connections with people regardless of that, because he may realize that that is one of the better things in life. This is why he says the man in the shed is me and the girl is you. He says "please don't think I'm not your sort", or don't take his demeanor the wrong way. He wanted people to connect and to brighten up things in his mind.
