Sugar Ray: Every Morning Meaning
Every Morning Lyrics
from the corner of my girlfriend's four post bed
I know it's not mine but I see if I can use it for
the weekend or a one-night stand
Couldn't understand
How to work it out
Once again as predicted left my...

#1 top rated interpretation:Sugar Ray claims to not have an underlying theme in this song, however it is unclear whether that is the truth or if they decided to keep it to themselves and leave it open to the many possible interpretations. here is my take:
This song is about a back and forth relationship between lovers; it's about how they continuously cheat on each other in a never ending cycle of revenge, forgiveness, and love
First chorus
"every morning there's a halo hanging from the corner of my girlfriends 4 post bed" - starts out with his girlfriends "halo", his glorified perception of her, hanging on post--instead of her head.. she hung it up for the night before to cheat on him.
"I know it's not mine but I see if I can use it..." - he wants to borrow her angelic perception, so that he can go out and do the same thing back to her, and make it hurt her as he was hurt.
First verse:
"once again, as predicted, left my broken heart open and you ripped it out" - self explanatory, talking about how she broke his heart yet again, by cheating
"somethings got me reeling, stop me from believing" - he's telling her that he can't do it anymore and he no longer believes that she loves him,
"turn me around again - yet he wants to believe it, and he's pleading with her to convince him again, the only way they know how... by sleeping together:
"[she] said that we can do it, you know i wanna do it again" - she offers him sex as reparation for her betrayal, he accepts
"she always rights the wrong, for me" - it worked out, as always, by sleeping together again
Second chorus:
"every morning there's a heartache hanging from the corner of my girlfriends 4 post bed" - this time, he's cheated on her and its her heartache that they wake up to.
"I know she thinks she loves me but I never can believe what she said" - he's doubting their relationship and regretting his actions, he's ashamed and can't imagine that she could still love him
Second verse:
"something so deceiving, when you start believing, turn me around again" - she's turned his feelings upside down yet again by staying with him, and he starts believing she loves him again. The deception he's talking about is part of the view of the big picture, that their reletionship involves so much deception for the purpose of building each others love up, seemingly just for the purpose of breaking it down again.
"said we couldn't do it, you know i wanna do it again" - now he's offering her sex as atonement, and she is resistant at first, more resistant they he was
"she always rights the wrong, for me" - she gave in, they slept together, and the cycle begins again with the repetition of the first chorus.
This is the first post on this song here (first Sugar Ray post actually... quite disappointing), so add your two cents I'd like criticism of my interpretation and to hear your own. -
Well here I am again seeing a way more generally appropriate meaning before reading all of this. I thought the halo symbolized how he sees her as mostly perfect but when he says heartache in its place, to me that means every one has their demons and hers put him through pain. The only part that didn’t make sense which is how I ended up here is when he says I know she thinks she loves me but I never can believe what she says. I just thought she may have had some pretty deep issues. A song can mean different things to different people and I like the song so I’m going back to the meaning I originally thought of

Since it’s been years since anyone has commented on this post, or even seems to have listened to this brilliantly written record, I will just say it: IT IS ABOUT PEGGING. He is being sodomized by her, by a strap-on dildo. The “halo” doesn’t represent a used condom, but actually signifies rebellion of holiness, sin and abomination. “Every Morning he wakes up, he is aware of what took place last night, but despite the shame and guilt, he actually begins to enjoy it more and more. Thus the line, “couldn’t understand, how to work it out.” He knows within his heart that it’s wrong and will more than likely lead to more depravity. However, if he enjoys it so much, someone else will.

A halo is a used condom.

This is a great song, sung well about a time in the late 90's where women were starting to get into cheating as much as men. Listen here first, the mid 90's a lot of norms were adjusting. Of coarse there were many decades that women were provocative, but it comes and goes, so is history.
The halo can represent a few things, as young as Sugar Ray was (my age), I like to think of the condom. Sure, very sick and suggestive, so what?, it explains what's killin' him. You don't pass sex off unless your done with it.
So she lies to him, wah wah wah, he buys it cuz he wants to believe, so he can do it again and get past the pain, or there could be so many other reasons why he needs to get past this.
But then later: "Somethings so deceiving, when u start believing"........her lies are piling up and he doesn't believe her anymore, and he doesn't really care to????
The Greatest thing about this song is "Do it Again", it just keeps going, and so does our foolishness sometimes.
But there is a hole i cant get in this song.
He keeps saying "Every morning when i wake up" like he is sleeping with her and when he wakes up there is a Halo hanging on the bed???
its just a chorus but has me confused at the end -
Its not a used condom thats the stupidest shit ever if it was he wouldnt reuse it for the weekend or a one night stand sugar ray didn't make that much money but they made enough to buy new rubbers

I very much like this interpretation. It was similar to what I thought but you filled in the gaps for me. Also the idea that the Halo may represent a condom is interesting and possible, but for all purposes of deeper meaning I accept the interpretation that has been provided here. Thank you very much!

I hate to be the weirdo but the halo is a used condom... For real. But the problem is its not his.
Everything else above is right though, about the cheating and what not. -
I agree with your interpretation. Weird that Sugar Ray didn't comment on it.
