Daydream Believer Lyrics

#1 top rated interpretation:I think this song is about a pair of newlyweds who are just starting to deal with everyday life together.
The husband, the narrator of the song, is a "daydream believer," which means he's a starry eyed romantic, while his bride is a wholesome, beautiful girl-next-door type (the kind of girl who gets eleoted "homecoming queen" at American high schools").
As the alarm clock goes off, he and his bride are waking up on an ordinary morning. He gets out of bed, gets washed and starts to shave.
He's telling his bride, "We used to idealize each other. You thought of me as your knight in shining armor, and I thought of you as Miss Perfect. But now that we're living together every day, you're seeing the real, ordinary, everyday me and I'm seeing the real ordinary you. And you know what? That's okay with me! The real me and the real you are going to be happy together... even though the honeymoon is now over, and we don't have two cents to our name!" -
Actually, the true lyrics as written by John Stewart were “Now you know how funky I can be.” Here is the story... https://youtu.be/FtOYNwhG0kQ

I know that he got smashed with my parents at a bar in London one night. They were discussing my being 16 and madly in love with a 28 year old guy. Mom was saying I was such a daydreamer, expecting to ride off with my dreams on a steed. I was popular, a Homecoming Queen, a spoiled brat. Dad said it would interfere with COLLEGE. Mom said I would never wake up if I went to college because I was a lazy bum. They often brought it up through the years... I had everything Monkees and when they heard those lyrics Mom always thought the songwriter they spent hours with wrote about me. She said he asked so many questions and was fascinated.

How can the meaning be all about a girl? “My shaving razor’s cold and it stings,” and “You once thought of me as your white knight on his steed.”

I think it is about a once popular high school girl who was also a home coming queen. After high school she has learned that once outside her bubble in high school life can suck and she yearns for her high school years. She has learn to deal with her reality.

To me this song is about when we're discouraged and the bad times hit, what's it to us? If we've still got each other, then we've got EVERYTHING...because LOVE
❤️ is waaaay more important than money!
Plus, we know who we are... -
I love those last two interpretations and agree with them wholeheartedly...I'm not sure I can really add anything to what the last two writers said except that when life is hard and kicking your butt and you haven't realized your dreams yet, and you're tired and broke and not sure about your identity, ( because being broke and unpopular can really mess with that), keeping a good "cheery" attitude is very important and can change everything and can bring you back to a state where you feel young and hopeful again...because there's always hope!!! There's something in this song that is so perfect, so magical...so comforting...whatever you want to call it...Gods grace is in this song... I will never get tired of hearing it or singing it... (it's also easy to play on the guitar...) Thank you, John Stewart, the writer, for in this beautiful song of yours you have given all of us "Daydream Believers" a precious gift

I think this song is about a person who was once a "Daydream Believer" and a "Homecoming Queen" but is now tired and experiencing money problems. The song is trying to tell them that they need to be the person they were in order for things to look up for them. Sort of saying being a "Daydream Believer" is meaning to be hopeful on your future and being a "Homecoming Queen" meaning to stay confident, because a homecoming queen needs confidence. This song can make anyone feel better in an instant.
