alt-J: Hunger of the Pine Meaning
Song Released: 2014
Hunger of the Pine Lyrics
Butterflies and needles
Line my seemed-up join
Encased incase I need it
In my stomach, for my heart
Chain mail
Hunger of the pine (x2)
Sleeplessly embracing
Yawn yearns into me
Plenty more tears in the sea...
-
World War 1 or 2
The pine is the stretcher he is carried on
He is in a field hospital
In and out of consciousness
She loves him and he does her
They have sex - female rebel
He realises that women are just as strong as men
He wants to fight together as a couple

I think it was written about 1984 to describe Winston and Julia. Call me crazy. But it fits them perfectly.

In this beautiful poetic interpretation of what I beleve is love alt-j may be describing what it is to have a hunger for love. Pine means to feel a lingering, or nostalgic desire. "Hunger of the Pine" I think this guy loves this woman with all he has, but she's holding back, not on purpose though but because she may have had to protect her heart with the armor so that it wouldn't get broken again "I'm a female rebel" I think she says it out of anguish. He loves her though and she can't seem to break down her walls which is where the French comes in at. In the song they sing "Une immense espérance traversée la terre, une immense espérance a traversée ma peur" - "A Great Hope through the earth, a Great Hope has crossed my fear" I'm thinking this means he rather return to the earth (die) than be without her which is his worst fear, but his only hope of escaping the pain he feels.
