Andy Black: Put the Gun Down Meaning
Put the Gun Down Lyrics
Hate is running through my veins, steady now I'm taking aim
The darkness of day, all the skies are turning to grey
I can't tune the voices out, how'd they get so god damn loud...
-
Night is when his thoughts creep up on him and he's alone with his own mind. His thoughts affect him on how he sees the day. It no longer is a break away from the darkness and loneliness of his thoughts at night, and the light of the sun that pieces the smoke of his own mind, is dulling, taking a toll on his daily life; and not only when he's alone. The so called "voices" are the negative thoughts becoming stronger and stronger, and him being unable to ignore them anymore. He feels trapped inside as if he has been keeping a mask on, hiding his true emotions. He might also have ideas and things that make him, well him. But because society refuses to accept these things that he's been keeping inside, which may be suicidal thoughts or anger. So nobody will know how lost and depressed he is, and how he's practically screaming out for help, and nobody would stop for a second to help him back on the right track. Because of this, he is questioning if anyone will stop him from killing himself or if they will just sit back and watch him end his own life. He starts thinking that this is the last time he would mess anything up and then comes to his senses that he should just put the gun away and not end his own life. He is now gripping onto life, but things are out of his control. But he is starting to analyze himself. An he realizes that he needs to fix himself and take responsibility in his own life. He's tired of blaming people for his problems. He looks back on everything he's done and all of the things he achieved in life. But...he's still in a battle between himself and depression/suicidal thoughts. We don't know if he's pointing the gun towards himself again or at the suicidal thoughts.

I believe this song is to help you overcome everything and contemplating whether or not you are worthy of life, feeling broken and alone, you try to end it but inside you want so badly someone to hear you, to see you, and to care so they can stop you from making your awful mistake and to help you, to be there with you through the rough patches and to be there when you are feeling down, you need someone to help you not make your last mistake.

Andy stated that he isn't suicidal and the song wasn't created for that reason. The song can people struggling with depression, but it's main focus is to encourage fans to push through and overcome obstacles that are making it difficult to move forward.

This is a cry for help from a depressed person. About to commit suicide, he calls for help, saying how he can't control it, how he is losing himself, and is waiting for anyone to hear him, see him, and stop him from making his last mistake.
