Anne Murray: Snowbird Meaning
Song Released: 1970
Snowbird Lyrics
The unborn grass lies waiting
For its coat to turn to green
The snowbird sings the song he always sings
And speaks to me of flowers
That will bloom again in spring
When I was young my heart was young...
-
The snowbird is a common name for the Junco species who indeed do fly away in spring after spending the winter in colder climes

Age is irrelevant. It's got nothing to do with growing up you plum! I agree with 2017 comment; when "the one" doesn't feel the same, it's one of the worst pains you can/will ever go through. I know from experience. This song is perfect & chokes me up every time I hear it
-
the bird is a metaphor
the singer is unable to deal with loss of loved one who cheated on them and feels trapped in that feeling of being unable to move on and the bird [the other person] is free to move on and fly away -
Somebody got cheated on and they're bummed out that the innocence they knew as a child, the simple beauty of love they saw in a snow bird, is gone. Grow up. Everybody hurts. REM.
