this song is literally dylan begging his wife sara not to divorce him. he wrote this song and when he was in a recording session he started playing it. he didn't know that sara was in another room and could hear him. it chronicles the highlights of their marriage, perhaps things that were very important to her, one line says" i can still hear the sound of those methodist bells i've taken the cure and i'm just getting through. staying up for days in the chealsa hotel writing sad eyed lady of the lowlands for you", this is a rallying point for people who want the chelsea hotel not to be torn down a year ago.many famous people stayed there. the song sara apparently worked as they got back together only to divorce later. also on this album "blood on the tracks" considered his best album by many is the song "idiot wind" which winds up with dylan accepting blame to his part in the divorce. but that's another interpratation
