Brett Young: Don't Wanna Write This Song Meaning
Song Released: 2018
Don't Wanna Write This Song Lyrics
I know it might sound crazy, but I haven't changed your pillowcase
A heart half full, or half empty
Is half gone either way, with you gone
What went wrong?
Maybe the hardest...

I feel like he is definitely writing about someone he lived so deeply passing. I lost my husband of 10 years tragically aug,20th 2016 and the way he describes what he feels is "weird" sounds so normal for me. I understand this fully and resonate so much with "Bobby pins on the dresser
Wilted flowers in a vase
I left a rose on your headstone
I never quite know what to say". There are things you leave around for a long time and yeah what do you say to a headstone? You don't feel like they are there...or maybe it's even real.you really do feel like you are going to die whether you end up living from being so sad and not able to go on so it's easy to turn to drinking and addictions because you are doing to die anyways hence:"Another glass of whiskey, by your picture in a frame
I'm playin' all the black keys and cryin' out your name
I'm holdin' on, or lettin' go
It's gonna kill me either way
With you gone"...doesn't really matter whether you live or die at some point. So if it makes me feel this emotional 3 years later he had to have wrote it about someone he loved so much it was like his soul was ripped out of him and he died along with her that day but he was eventually reborn and found a way to make his pain work for him...insert this amazing beautiful song which I am sure has moved and helped more people in this world process the passing of loved ones more than he knows. Just a really phenomenal song. -
Don't Wanna Write This Song by Brett Young, he has nice country music voice. The latest comment, I agree about your thought on this song and this song is very powerful regardless the meaning.
However, it said on songfacts that it was about his lover.
About your question, is it more? I think when he said, "don't wanna write this song" it means he can't love again and continue his life without her. It seems his song or life was stopped or in a halt because she has passed on. It's like, she was his song. You are correct, a breakup could easily be a symbolic similar to a passing on of a loved one.

On the surface song appears to be about a girl and how breaking up is harder when neither one cheats, or lies. It’s harder to just admit that they were just not right.
To me though, this song may be about more. The one lyric that sticks with me is “I left a rose on your headstone
I never quite know what to say”
Now this could easily be symbolic for a breakup being similar to a death, but I wonder is it more?
Just like “sober Saturday night” we may have to wait for the music video to realize what the song is really about, but I personally believe he is writing about literally losing his love, as in she has passed on. The way this line is emphasized by Brett as he sings it quieter and then makes the next line louder.
I think this song about about the girl he loved passing on.
Just my two cents. Feel free to disagree.
This song is very powerful regardless of meaning. Hold on tight to your loved ones...
