The Cars: Soon Meaning
Soon Lyrics
With one another we don't have to pretend
You could turn me down or over twice
You could treat me mean or treat me nice
But soon the time will come I know what I put you through
The time will...

I’ve listen to this song over and over, it’s a very sad ballad, my belief is that Ric sees the demise of his marriage on the horizon and knows it’s just a matter of time. He loves his wife dearly and she means the world to him, however she is suffering from something lacking in the relationship. My guess is she feels isolated and Ric was never a socialite and she is much younger and feels the need to do more in life. Recent news explains Ric kept his wife out of his will, states that she abandoned him. He knows he had some issues and that’s what he is referring to when the lyrics state “i know what i put you through”. Of course I can be totally off here but this is my own interpretation, been a Cars fan since 1979.
