Songs about Karma
Probably no religious concept is misunderstood in the Western mind as much as karma is. It's not a physical or spiritual force; there isn't a book-keeper out there somewhere magically making the score stay balanced. Instead, it's the universal tendency for sowing what you reap. In Western thought, it's best expressed as "What comes around goes around." But it's funny, whenever you hear somebody say this, they're always phrasing it as directed at somebody else, never thinking that what just happened to them might have been just deserts. Even Jesus was on the record (gospel of Matthew, chapter 7) as saying "Judge not lest that you be judged." See, even Jesus believed in karma!
These songs tend to evoke karma in the magical realism sense, usually directed at somebody else. It's an interesting poetic concept, but let's face it: If your target were truly deserving, they'd get it whether you point it out to them or not.
