A third generation land owner reflects back on the years that his family has farmed the land. As time goes on and his generation is farming he realizes it's not as prosperous as the generations before him. He blames the change of time for this and it's depressing even though he holds on tightly to

Having inherited someone else's dream, the place once filled with abundance and life has now become a haunted curse because the joy has gone from life and he is left with emptiness and loneliness. His only companion has become an evil-looking scarecrow. The irony of the scarecrow is in its relationship to the owner – it used to be friendly but now the man feels haunted by the scarecrow in the very ground that used to be a blessing - now a curse, and the scarecrow now stares at the man in the song as a focal point of fear and depression, a scarecrow being the essence of a zombie-like life.
