Colin Hay: Maggie Meaning
Maggie Lyrics
First you beat me up
Then you kissed me too
We'd throw stones into the sea
There were no others there
Just you and me
Across the bridge and down the lane
I knew I loved you then
You said you did the...

This song had me welling up.
The lyrics deserve an award for sure. Maggie is a real person, she's much much older than Colin in his eyes, she's an older girl, she's 9 years old he's nearly 9 and they go play around the seafront flinging rocks into the sea and stuff.
(sounds like it relates to puppy love that most of us all went through and had a crush on a girl that lived in the same street)
She's 9 but he's not quite mature enough to make the 1st move as he's only 8 which is a massive age gap as he calls her an Much Older than him and she's already hit him once before! so she's no walkover! She's taking no shit and she's in charge.
They both grow into teenagers and now she's 17 and he's still got feelings for her but she's with another guy and she's unhealthily thin looking. Next thing we know her mother calls crying to Colin.. she's left Colin a written note about her love for him and only him but, she's GONE! does this mean she's left town? Left the Country? Committed Suicide? Or died of a fatal illness? Colin doesn't quite tell us why she's gone but in my mind I'm thinking 2 reasons as I scope in on the Lyrics. She's either fell I'll to a fatal disease Or she's walked into the sea and committed suicide where they used to play.
The lyrics tell us that Maggie has become awfully thin hinting towards drug use or cancer.
The lyrics also tell us that she's now Free! Presumably free of pain whether it be mental pain or pain from an illness but she's free now and she's telling Collins in his dreaams that it's just the 2 of them now and nobody else and she'll be waiting on him to go play down the seafront again!
Hmm.. my interpretation is Maggie knew the affection Colin had for her but as they where getting into their teens they maybe had different circles of friends and started drifting apart as she had passed him with a boyfriend and maybe he didn't quite pluck up the courage early enough to ask her out properly as boyfriend & girlfriend as she was that little bit older and wiser and probably used the other guy to walk with her to make Colin overcome his shyness But,it was all too late. Where did she go we are all left asking? why is her mother crying we are asking? Did she die of an illness? Did she commit suicide? Whatever happened to her she's GONE, she's died, Maggie is FREE and waiting on Colin down on that seafront so they can go back to 9 year olds and fling stones and run around together as children again. She knows she should have taken him by the hand and led the way but wanted Colin to do the manly thing and do it for himself. If he only asked her out on a proper date we wouldn't be welling up over these beautiful Lyrics.
Monty.
