Basically it's talking about all the people in Alex Ebert's (lead singer) life that tried to crush his dreams and told him his endeavors of changing the world were pointless and hopeless. But what Alex is saying in this song is simply "They are wrong" meaning he can and has made a difference in the world and lives of others. Never give up on your dream and never let anybody crush it!
