Elliot Smith: Say Yes Meaning

First, y’all gotta spell his name right (Elliott)!
This song is written about Joanna Bolme.
It’s about running away from someone out of fear of getting hurt and then realizing you’ve made a mistake.
He wants her back, but also understands how fucked up he is and that she may not want him back. “Crooked spin, can’t come to rest. I’m damaged bad, at best. She’ll decide what she wants.”
My favorite lines are “I’ll probably be the last to know. No one says until it shows,” because whether or not she takes him back, he won’t know how she actually feels about him until she’s either already expressed it to her friends or moved on to someone else. Such a pretty tune.
