Fleet Foxes: Helplessness Blues Meaning
Helplessness Blues Lyrics
-
I completely disagree with the first interpretation, but it's music so no one really knows an exact answer. I think it's saying it doesn't necessarily matter who you are or what you become in life, but instead what you do with your life on this world. A cog, or gear, in a machine is just a small common piece but it keeps the machine working efficiently.

I think this song is about believing in yourself and being an individual. (as explained in the first verse) then during the chorus, he is saying that let me be, and let me do what I want. I don't want to be in an office of a huge company, or have to bow down to someone. Other than god. Let me determine my own future. He is having a lot of doubt in people because everyone is telling him different things. The world is very confusing and there are so many emotions to come out of it. You shouldn't wait for anyone, and don't let people take you for granted. This song is a really good piece of advice.
