Gnarls Barkley: Crazy Meaning
Song Released: 2006
Crazy Lyrics
There was something so pleasant about that place.
Even your emotions have an echo
in so much space
And when you're out there
Without care,
Yeah, I was out of touch
But it wasn't...

It's a man with multiple personality? Schizophrenia? having a conversation with himself.

after listening to 'crazy' - the song is about everyone's inner spirit- who wants to be free not in a 9-5 job. it talks of the feeling u have well you finally outrage: on top of the world but crazy.and then the other character looking as if the crazy one is crazy.

The first time I heard it I assumed the hidden msg was about the guilt & other emotions of the sin of sex..however that was in 2006,i was much younger & that was probably the life dilemma in my life at the time I heard the song..hence automatically mentally applying my situation to the vague but strongly relative details of the song..as what I think is the true purpose the song was made with no distinct so that its meaning can be specific to the listener...crazy,& "lost my mind" being phrased in that way to magnify catastrophic guilt..we've all been there. Where u must have been crazy to do or allow something to happen in your life.whether drugs,sex,love,abuse.....my meaning changes with my experiences. Great song !!!!

I went through a time with mental illness, and believed that everyone else in society was crazy, as I was happy in my state of mind, and 'when you're out there', you really do know too much, you see the world for what it is.....Gnarls Barkley summed up a 'mental episode' better than any one else before or since.

well obviously ya'll didnt read the wikipedia(yes i kno it can be changed)article on cee-lo(except sumbody on here who read about da song)but in case u didnt know cee-lo's dad died wen he was 2 and his mom(a firefighter)was in a car crash, got paralyzed& died 2 yrs latr wen cee-lo was 18, so that wer i think the all my heroes died out on a limb part means, but the rest its just for fun and making people think that him and the other person in Gnarls-Barkley are just crazy...but if this song wer about drugs then it would be there way of saying don't do drugs,u will lose ur mind...but as far as i know cee-lo was never on drugs

The song is about the human mind and perception, and what is truly possible for consciousness without the human. He is describing "losing his mind", and goes on to say that even his emotions, arguably the most fundamentally integrated element of a human being, become separated from consciousness and "have an echo". He goes on to say that when out there, you're out of touch, but not because don't know enough, but you know too much, about the true nature of things, and the universe.
He is describing what it's like to see humans and everything humans do from the outside, and then, to see what lies beyond human comprehension. The song is called "Crazy", because when you're outside the human condition, looking inside the circle from the outside freedom, everyone else looks crazy, but crazy is defined as thinking something that disagrees with the general human consensus. So, technically, he is crazy, but only he knows that everyone else is crazy.
He goes on to say that he can die when he's done, because he knows that human perception and thought and life are a block for the truth, which is much larger than humans, and is true freedom. -
no man.
It's a spiritual song, about someone who has stepped out and seen things from another perspective. It doesn't matter how it happened.
But this is why he "knew too much"
And it's also why he wishes well others to have the time of their lives, but warns them to "think twice".
What are we doing with our lives? What do we become a part of when we are "American", "Christian", "Solder", "Successful", "Failure" or any of these words? What's underneath them? What do they create for the world? For everyone? Do they create unity? Do they create division?
What are YOU when, in your deepest heart, and in your life, you are NONE of these things?
Who do you think you are?
Go that direction, and you'll be outside. You'll appear crazy to the world, and the world will appear crazy to you.
He doesn't mention the names of his heroes because people would get the wrong idea if he did. -
This song is about how he fell in love with a girl ("I remember when I lost my mind"). "There was something so pleasant about that place". It was pleasant because she was there. Her emotions "had an echo in so much space", and he felt them, because he loved her.
And when she was out there doing drugs without care, he stayed away from her, because "I just knew too much." He knew she was into drugs. "Does that make me crazy" that I still loved you, knowing what I knew about you. "I hope you're having the time of your life", doing drugs and whatever, but without judging you, I advise you gently to think about what you're doing("think twice, it's my only advice"), because I want you to stop using drugs, because I love you and care about you still.
"Come on now, who do you think you are? Ha ha ha, bless your soul!" (I'm going to save you.)
"Do you really think you're in control?" No, you're out of control and you need help. You're crazy for doing drugs, and I'm crazy for thinking I'm going to save you. "I think you're crazy, just like me." We're both crazy.
"My heroes had the heart to lose their lives out on a limb. And all I remember is thinkin' I wanna be like them." I'm going to go out on a limb to save you.
"Ever since I was little it looked like fun." To be the hero who saved the damsel in distress.
"And it's no coincidence I've come." There's a reason I've come back into your life; my purpose is to save you.
"And I can die when I'm done." The most heroic are those who die for a good cause. My purpose in life now is to save you. When I've saved you, my life will be fulfilled and I can die in peace.
"But maybe I'm crazy." This plan to save you is out of the ordinary, like a dream, a fantasy. It's a daunting task. But I'm committed to it, because I love you.
"Maybe you're crazy." You will think I'm crazy for reaching out for you, but I think you love me too.
"Maybe we're crazy, Probably." We have a lot in common. I think we love each other.

I read he had a conversation about how music artists are only really appreciated when they're a little bit crazy and wrote the song based off that, it is interesting to see all these interpretations though...

The song is about how we think and see the world. How our thought have more control over us.

Sorry for my english, i think this song talk about how people seeing you, crazy or at a normal people, and what's realy normal ? or crazy ? I mean he says "Maybe, possibly, probably" to say, we don't no who is really on the right way..."c'mon who do you think you are ? you think your in control" maybe he talk about the illusion of self, we think we are that or that, and we say "i'm pretty sure this is me", but is just our ego...

This song is about realizing that you came in to this life to die young and you always knew it(I just knew too much). So you are not afraid of anything, even death as it stares you right at the eye.(you are out there without care and some people might say that you have lost your mind). You came into this world to experience death, just like a hero.(it looked like fun and my heroes would die at a limb). only god can control the most important thing in your life: your death. You have no control (you are crazy if you think you are). You are not a king only God is and when you realize this you will understand the true meanings to this song.

You are all overthinking this.... it's about childhood. Remember when you were doing just what felt good, didn't know any better? It's about that innocent free thinking we do as children.... and we have heroes... then we grow up and understand what it really takes to be a "hero", sacrifices, etc... It's about remembering and loving that pleasantly free unencumbered feeling...
