Gnarls Barkley: Crazy Meaning
Song Released: 2006
Crazy Lyrics
There was something so pleasant about that place.
Even your emotions have an echo
in so much space
And when you're out there
Without care,
Yeah, I was out of touch
But it wasn't...

i dont think drugs had anything to do with it, how much drug addicts would like to, he just was on the other side had different viewpoints..he was into music..high on music.
He remembered a lifetime that his sound was in control, his song was crazy and he just could do it that way, he believed in himeself, he wanted to be that way and suddenly the world turned that way.. so no wonder he believes its better to be that way, stay your own find yourself and /f8ck all who think your crazy... or rather just let them think that because he found the way out...with the power of music.
no drugs involved. -
This song is about a heartbroken guy after he's realized that his girl has moved on with her life as if it all meant nothing. Of course it meant everything to this guy and his shattered life leads him to proudly view suicide as the only thing left in his control. The essence of the song comes across in the way it is sung: a wounded soul who is looking to justify the ultimate sacrifice.
This song has nothing to do with gang life, other than, perhaps, someone who had a hard life may not be equipped emotionally ability to deal with this pain. This song has nothing to do with drugs either because the descriptions used to described his mental state are clearly stated in the lyrics and there is absolutely no reference to drugs. -
This song about a man that is little manic, but he knows a little to much.

Speaking for myself, mental illness is not always a pleasant place like the song "Crazy" suggests. It can be a terrifying experience, some kill themselves.
There is a lot of stigma associated with mental illness. If the artist himself is mentally ill, I would be interested in hearing his own interpretation of the song because it collides with my experiences. I cannot say I have much respect personally for people who experiment with mind-altering drugs when they are functioning just fine...to me it shows a lapse in judgment which they cannot fully appreciate...sort of like driving fast without your seatbelt all the time, it doesn't really matter until you get into a bad accident, then you learn the hard way. Or perhaps those who experiment are actually self-medicating themselves with an unregulated drug of choice but lack the courage or direction to get professional help.

I'm feel pretty confident that this song is about DMT, the most potent psychedelic known to man kind, I myself have done this, and I couldn't describe this song ANY OTHER WAY then where he too found himself in that space. He says, "There was something so pleasant about that place.
Even your emotions have an echo
in so much space" he lost his mind but something so pleasant about that place, and emotions echo in so much space, this is true in the DMT dome space you reach after you fall into some kind of wormhole.
and this part:
Come on now, who do you, who do you, who do you, who do you think you are
Ha ha ha bless your soul
You really think you're in control
Well, I think you're crazy
You find yourself in DMT as not being in control, only being an observer of this world and your own co-created reality dream, in the DMT you find out some higher entity or god or SOMETHING other then all of the consciousness here with us, is in control and is in a path for something indescribable. (i like that he laughs and says bless your soul) because we are no who we think we are, we are something MUCH MORE... I dont know about the rest of you but, I'd bet all my money on that he's talking about DMT, and/or possibly magic mushrooms, but by the content i'd place it more to be the DMT "place" you go to, this isnt an altered state of mind, this is a PLACE you go, your mind or thoughts, your judgment on things isnt touched AT ALL, expect your immediate surroundings, in that open space. -
I don't understand why everybody has to say that when he says "emotional echo" for example that it HAS TO BE DRUGS and absolutely nothing else. Did you ever think that lyrics are sometime if not most of the time meant to be figurative and made to provoke deep thought rather than simple thoughts such as "oh yeah, its drugs". I think that this song is most likely about being in love or growing up. I say that it could also be about growing up because he says "My heroes had the heart to lose their lives out on a limb And all I remember is thinking, I want to be like them" could be referring to the idols in his life that he wanted to/ still wants to be like but slowly realizes what life is really like, "Ever since I was little, ever since I was little it looked like fun".

I cant find a meaning to his lyrics, and after reading other interpretation, everybody talks about drugs. i dont agree but i dont disagree. the ink dots on his video make me think theres more to it, if you look closely, you can see a form of illuminati.. look closely and you will see every form of the devil's face or hiddin illuminati symbols appearing in the ink.

My first thought to what the lyrics referred to was war. They know what's going on more then "we" do and we should count our blessings in our ignorance about the real deal-live our lives, but be aware things could change at any given moment. Now having said all that, I agree it could be mean any number of things and that to me is a sign of great writing-leave the receiver to come to their own conclusions.

It is what it is for and to whomever 'feels it'. Drugs, love gone wrong, and more.

This song can have many meanings, but what I really think he is trying to say is about a high level of consciousness, another dimension, a state of mind where you dont need physical body, just your soul/consciousness. Maybe you dont know anything about that, but it is very practical not theorical, when you expand your consciousness, of course you think you're crazy, nothing is like it should be, we used to see the world as the only reality, but inside your head there are many realities, people say that mind can do everything, but does that make it less real than "our" reality?
even you emotions have an echo in so much place, that state of mind is pure energy, emotions, feelings and intentions are the the way to communicate, not words, not languages, no possibilities for misunderstandings, to understand it you should try it, there is not any other way to do it. When you reach it, that knowledge is a big responsibility, you can't ignore what happened to you and say "i just was so stoned", your entire life and perception of the world will change, that is why he is trying to give an advice, do you feel in control?? you don't have idea about what kind of things live in your mind, ones you see them and understand how it works, you will think twice regarding do wrong things, trust me, when you use the doors of perception, it is not because you don't know enough, its because you know too much. People that ignores these stuff and think that science is god and all that bullshit, really feel in control, when they die, they'll see that their entire life was in ignorance regarding life!
Just see the video, it is very clear, what kind of stuffs could live inside you? you don't have idea, I do, that is why I decided to stop listening the voices that make you do wrong things. People always laugh and say that I'm crazy, but we all are crazy, I just kinda know more, just like Barkley. -
This song NEVER says anything that points directly to drugs. Thinking it is about drugs hinders you from seeing what it is really about...People can interpret it how they want to, but this song is really much more than that. He is talking about how his level of awareness and intelligence is above the rest, he is lonely at the top, watching everyone else, and they all think he is crazy. He was "out of touch" not because he "didn't know enough, [he] just knew too much". His emotions having an "echo in so much space" is reflecting sensitivity and therefore 'over'awareness of the insanity of the world. If one looks around at the world objectively, it is crazy, and it takes objective perception, awareness, and smarts to see the craziness...One has to be crazy to think the world is normal. Anyone who has had a nervous breakdown or gone through hardship knows what it is like to lose his /her mind. This is where your emotions echo. I think Gnarls is trying to explain that people trick themselves into thinking they know everything and are in control of everything when in fact it is BS, and that makes them crazy.
He thinks people are crazy for being confident in a certain role or personality that has ignorance or the world around them.
I guess the last verse he is saying that he doesn't really know for sure, but everyone is probably crazy!!
Thats how i see it, at leest -

"My heroes had the heart to lose their lives out on a limb"
He's talking about Bob Marley.

Well first of all this is the type of a song that can be interpreted on many different levels, and while a lot of people that connect the song's meaning with psychedelic drugs are probably right(the cover of the album and the single kind of fall on that theme) I want to publish another take on this song. In my opinion this song is against any kind of government. In the first lines:
"I remember when, I remember, I remember when I lost my mind
There was something so pleasant about that place.
Even your emotions had an echo
In so much space"
The author reflects on the first time he found out about some sort of truth, and it first he felt pleasant and was happy. In the next lines, we realize that the government is not too fond of his discovery:"And when you're out there
Without care,
Yeah, I was out of touch
But it wasn't because I didn't know enough
I just knew too much"
Since he knows too much now he has to hide, and it's making him crazy, because he is isolated from the world. In the second verse which goes:"And I hope that you are having the time of your life
But think twice, that's my only advice
Come on now, who do you, who do you, who do you, who do you think you are,
Ha ha ha bless your soul
You really think you're in control"
He warns people that are in search of truth, to be careful, because some people might not be able to handle it, and then he proceeds to warn the governments that they aren't in control and that the real power rests in people's hands.
Finally, in the third verse:"My heroes had the heart to lose their lives out on a limb
And all I remember is thinking, I want to be like them
Ever since I was little, ever since I was little it looked like fun
And it's no coincidence I've come
And I can die when I'm done" Cee-Lo reflects on the time in his childhood when he thought that learning the truth and revealing is fun and heroic, think of Prometeus, and now he is in the position of his role models, but he states that once he is done with his mission he can die, as there won't be any point in his life after that.
