    I think that the father tommy was a soldier or marine but when he got back to society he had it hard getting a job and he loses it to a robot. Then he starts using his military training to rob banks and stores so that he can help his family.

    I believe that Tommy is a random guy, lost his job, thinking that he'll die of hunger he should rob a bank/store to get some money

    They are talking about an armed robbery. The phrase "Stick Up" means where a gun is used to threaten whoever they are robbing. They are practically just talking about a robbery.
