Greek Fire: On Top of the World Meaning
On Top of the World Lyrics
On top of the world, on top of it all, trying to feel invincible
Dying on top of the world
I remember the nights
Caught up in dreaming my ‘goodbyes’
Watching the door for anything more than an ordinary life
I...
-
That he is alone and No one will listen to him when he says "on top of the world, on top of it all trying to feel invincible" It sounds like me when I lost my dad
-
So, I've always kind of interpreted this song as being about suicide.
"On top of the world, on top of it all, trying to feel invincible
Dying on top of the world"
The speaker is on top of a very high ledge, and is contemplating whether or not they should jump.
"I remember the nights
Caught up in dreaming my ‘goodbyes’"
The speaker is talking about suicidal ideation, of thinking what they'd write in a suicide letter as well as potential ways to die.
"Watching the door for anything more than an ordinary life"
The speaker wants a reason to keep living, a change from the life they're leading that will spark hope into them.
"I remember the days
New beginnings on an open ‘page’
With something to prove and nothing to lose, not a soul to betray"
The speaker is referencing back when they didn't have depression, and how they felt like not only were their opportunities were limitless, but also like they could achieve their full potential as opposed to betray everyone counting on them.
"Here I am
Living a dream that I can’t hold
Here I am on my own"
Despite the speaker's success, they feel as if this is fleeting.
"I remember the lies
Caught up in building ‘paradise’
The angels were slaves and demons behaved and
Everything was alright"
The speaker tried to make a good life for themself, and while it took a toll on their mental health, their inner demons were still manageable.
"I hear the crowds beneath me
I’m wishing they could reach me
But I’m ‘on top of the world’
Up here I’m dying alone"
Loved ones and bystanders are trying to convince the speaker not to jump, but they aren't convinced.
"Inside the walls of gold, outside of happiness
It’s all been a show, too late to confess
No room for heart and soul, no room for innocence"
The speaker has made a good life for themself, but they aren't happy. They haven't been able to tell anyone though, and have kept up a facade of being fine. They wish they could go back to when they were "innocent", or rather, not depressed. -
this song represents that desire for new adventure. the character in the video seems to have a good job, a car, a family, etc., but telling by the expression on his face, there's no excitement or enjoyment. the lyrics say 'on top of the world, on top of it all, trying to feel invincible..." the character wants to be strong, knowing he should be grateful for all that he has, but there is something missing, and he is "dying on top of the world."
the character remembers all the journeys and adventures he had, before he actually reached a goal (on top of the world). the lyrics "i remember the days new beginnings on an open page, with something to prove, nothing to lose, not a soul to betray...." the character remembers when he could just go on an adventure, without having to make any sacrifices, or worry about anything.
the lyrics "here i am living a dream that i can't hold...." the character reached a goal, but can't accept the fact that there is no more adventure, and nothing else for him to do. and that loss of adventure caused the character pain with other things (the co-workers throwing papers on the job.)
the character's son knew how his father felt, and with all his materials in the video (grenades, paint, etc.) he was able to remind his dad of the adventures that can still exist.
this song is simply saying, while on a journey, learn to appreciate all the adventures on the way, because when you reach your goal, it will be hard to find new ones.also, don't be afraid to go on these adventures, because those little sacrifices will help you survive other challenges
