He is lonely and meets a girl he wants to spend the night with. When she is about to leave he tells her they could do other things instead because he wants to know if they are meant for eachother. He says she's lonely and so is he so there is no point in her leaving. But he also realizes that they were never supposed to get together.

This song is about the narrator, telling his new love that he want he/she to stay with them instead of going home, as they are unhappy there anyway so he/she doesn't understand why their love must go. The narrator names all sorts of things they could do if she stayed like " so won't you stay and count the circles around my eyes, and we can watch the stars until the sun begins to rise" He/she wants to know if the other is the love that got away from him, and he knows, that it was never meant to be.
