This song, like many others of its genre, is a man's story of looking back on his life and his regrets. He has made a great deal of mistakes, many of which have destroyed relationships with loved ones, that have made him not like who he is as a person.
-He slept with his best friend's younger sister ("I had a one night stand with my best friend's baby sister, And to this day he still won't speak to me")
-Pawned family heirloom ("I pawned my grandpa's old guitar in college for a case of beer and a tank of gasoline")
-Got into a physical altercation with his father, which turned out to be his last Christmas alive ("I took a swing at my old man one Christmas. I never dreamed that it would be his last"
-Became a smoker at a young age ("I wish mom had wrung my neck when she caught me with those cigarettes, which reminds me, I'm down to my last pack")
-Cursed out his brother when he wouldn't bail him out of jail ("I called my brother everything I could think of the night he wouldn't bail me out of jail")
-Lost a good job because of his dumb decisions ("I lost a job most folks 'round here would die for by laying out all night and raising hell")
-Lost a woman he loved because of "foolish pride" ("I let a woman that I loved slip through my fingers. Chalk another dumb move up to my foolish pride")
-Wasn't there with his family when his grandmother died (I wasn't there standin' by the bed when the preacher bowed his head with the family, the day my grandma died")

"If I had a dime for half the things I did
That didn't make no sense at all, I'd be living a little higher on the hog
If only I'd've known that later on down the road
I'd look back and not like what I see
Ohh, I'd've changed a lot of things... Startin' with me"

He is saying if he had a dime for each of half of his mistakes, he'd be doing better financially. If he had only known later on he would look back and regret these things, he would change things, especially the kind of person he is.

The song is pretty self-explanatory in most parts, but is pretty relatable to a lot of people.
