José González: Heartbeats Meaning
Song Released: 2006
Heartbeats Lyrics
one night to speed up truth
we had a promise made
four hands and then away
both under influence
we had divine scent
to know what to say
mind is a razorblade
to call for hands of above
to lean on
wouldn't be...

Always thought this to be about suicide, have sung it a million times and only now realised what it means to me.
The song implies a pretext of old friends that had taken seperate journeys and had other partners. They always had something they couldnt put there finger on until one night confusion hit them and they realised they had feelings for each other.
They said they would only do it once, that they could never be together. Joinded hands, kissed and clicked. The mind has a great way of ignoring guilt, feelings and pretending it would be ok.
The releif is the day it all comes to play and finally happens, years on chemistry, he/she is pushed (one is reprehensive as they loves the other more) until they make love.
Ten days is the feeling when you first meet someone, your mind sees no wrong - they happiest time which is why this song works so well as love or suicide.
He sings that she knew the hand of the devil, that what was being done was so wrong, but kept hope alive with a lie - both living two lives, i.e. her life would remain with her other boyfirend
He remains in pain as he has had his love and will never get her back. He now lives a lie and feels hopeless.
Not suggesting this is righ, but trying to figure out why I want to listen to this song so much - think the emotions in this speak to anything. -

The Knife is a brother/sister act - maybe it's about things they did as children.

It's actually about a one night stand with a bit of drugs mixed in but with the lines "Both under influence/We had divine scent/To know what to say/Mind is a razor blade." Karen (The Knife) is saying that she understood what was happening, her mind although dazed still had a clear perspective on the circumstances. It's about the potential of that one night stand, and what could have been.
"One night of magic rush/The start, a simple touch/One night to push and scream/And then relief."
This stanza is obviously about the one night stand that occurred.
I'm tired of people thinking Jose made the original, ahaha.
Again, a song about something brief that could've been something so much more. -
It's about skateboarding. Watch the video by The Knife.

"Heartbeats" is the first single from The Knife's 2003 album Deep Cuts. It was originally released in 2002, then following the success of an acoustic cover version by José González, it was re-released in 2004.

I have 2 interpretations of this song.
1. It is about pregnancy and having a baby.
See:
one night of magic rush
the start a simple touch
one night to push and scream
and then relief
ten days of perfect tunes
the colors red and blue
we had a promise made
we were in love
or something like that.
2. About 2 people who are in a relationship and they meet each other are fall in love with each other but can't be with each other because they are in other relationships -
I agree with the interpretation previously submitted. However it is also important to note that this song was originally sung by a woman. The original version is by 'the knife'. but it seems to be more or less universal to gender.

I really love this song and think the sound of it is very original. It's about guy that meets a woman and after the fisr time meeting, they have one very hot and steamy night of passion. They stay together for a short while after, the guy really seems to like this woman but suddenly she breaks it off without any explanation. He resents her for it cos he really trusted her and shared something deep with her where as she never wanted andything motre than a quick fling to fullfil her own personal agenda.
Now the guy will never trust any one or woman ever again
