Led Zeppelin: Rock and Roll Meaning
Song Released: 1972
Rock and Roll Lyrics
It's been a long time since I did the Stroll
Ooh, let me get it back, let me get it back, let me get it back
mm-baby, where I come from
It's been a long time, been a long time
Been a long lonely,...

The song is a cry for a time when things were easier, more full of unbridled joy, youth. A call back to the song, the groove, the gig, the girl when living in the now was like falling off a log. When days were fast and full of life, laughed at everything.

Rock and Roll is the second song on side one of Led Zeppelin's untitled album. It features the famous drum solo intro and conclusion and is very nostalgic in feeling. A very fun song to listen to.
Basically, Rock and Roll is a song that was written, from start to finish, in about fifteen minutes flat. Possibly twenty if one wishes to be generous. Therefore, it cannot contain much meaning except that it is a throw back to the old 1950s rock 'n' roll that the band grew up on. In fact, there are many references to songs of the 1950s. These include the Stroll which was a slow dance set to rock 'n' roll and originated in many African American communities. Another is the Book of Love by the Monotones. -
A tribute song to the earlier rock and roll icons who started the movement.

They wrote it in 15 minutes! It can't mean anything deep like what others have posted.

From what I understand I think this song is talking about the 50s, and how whoever wrote this song, wishes they could go back to those times "its been a long time since I did the stroll"(For those of you that dont, know the stroll was a dance done in the 50s) "Its been a long time since the book of love" ('The book of love was a song from the 50s)

My favorite Zeppelin song. Naturally it is about making love, but the emphasis is strongly on the loving experience, and open your arms let my love come running in is a beautiful imagery of heart opening loving connection. Taking me back to where I come from, might seem to mean a guy wanting to get back to being in the womb, but for me it means a bit different to that, to me it is about taking me back to the feeling of being my authentic self, away from the guards put up in day to day life, being completely free and true with the one you love.
