Dancing on the Ceiling Lyrics
Something is going on
That's not quite clear
Somebody turn on the light
We're gonna have a party
It's starting tonight
Oh, what a feeling!
When we're dancing on the ceiling
The room is hot...that's good

This song, without a doubt, is about an orgy.
Dancing on the ceiling, in general, invokes the image of someone with their legs upright during sex, but in this case, it's not a solo dance because Mr. Richie invited his friends over for the affair (pun intended).
It may be true that he heard someone say this as they walked by him, but that person was conveying the fact that they had just gotten laid.
Richie took it a step further and made it a group sex anthem for the coke fueled 80's.
It makes sense from the man who gave us songs like "Brick house" which, as it turns out, is not a song about the 3 little pigs. -
Bedroom mirrors on the ceiling.
-
It refers to when Lionel Ritchie was on a beach in Miami, early one morning
Lionel himself says a stranger walks by obviously still a bit drunk and “dancing”
Lionel asks the part man how are you, the reply was “I was dancing on the ceiling last night man” -
crazy, drug-induced party sex with her shoes on. Think about it
