The Night We Met Lyrics

"The Night We Met"

I am not the only traveler
Who has not repaid his debt
I've been searching for a trail to follow again
Take me back to the night we met

And then I can tell myself
What the hell I'm supposed to do
And then I can tell...

The song means a lot to me. My husband was on drugs for several years and we separated on and off on multiple occasions. Each time I was scared to move on since he was very abusive and controlling . At the time I was a bartender and I met this guy . This guy made me feel alive! I didn't feel depressed , scared, nothing that I felt before I met him. We didn't do anything except talk. I was scared to make a move . We continued to be friends until recently when he made it clear that we could never work out because my husband would always be there (since we have kids) my heart has been so broken because getting to know this guy I gained so much love for him , to the point that I wasn't scared anymore to leave a bad , controlling relationship. All I can think of now is the wonderful memory of the night we met and what grew into us falling for each other .. to only lose each other. It's painful. This song is painfully beautiful and when I hear it I can't help but cry .

I've listen to the song over and over again,

I think the loss of this person went so deep, that he wishes to go back to the night they met to break up before he fell in true love.
In hope he would suffer less.

Regardless of the true meaning, the lyrics are powerful. They describe raw emotion and longing for something that is no longer there (whether that’s a relationship or etc.) what’s so incredible about this song is that you can make it so personal to yourself and your own life. And I think that’s what all songs are, something that you can relate and interpret for your own self, even if it’s different than someone else’s. First time I heard this was from 13 Reasons (as I’m sure many people have). But looking at this song and relating it to the show, it couldn’t have been a more perfect song for the emotions that Clay is going through. Like I said, incredibly powerful song that is full of so much emotion.

I believe that this song was about losing someone. someone that meant so much to you. Now they have gone, and you wish you could have them back. I can feel the pain out of this mans heart when listening to this wonderful song.

Lord Huron’s “The Night We Met” (which is now at No. 1 on their Spotify page with more than 20,000,000 streams) soundtracks. “It was a song that felt like it would play at a dance,” Kent says. “Initially we had the thought of Mazzy Star, or something like that, but then we went more contemporary. It needed to have dual meaning. And that song was really interesting because in the beginning of the episode, it’s very sweet. Clay wants to get a copy of the song, and then it turns really dark when he’s having his hallucination, when he sees her during the basketball game and there’s blood all over her. I love how that song has this arc in the episode. It’s very sweet, and then it’s very haunting.”

i think the song is about a relationship with someone close like a best friend. At the beginning everything is good and you and the person are very close but as time goes on and things change and you start losing that person, from where you had "all" and then "some" till now "none" where you lose the person. Although it hurts you still miss that person and thinks of the first time you met.You start realising that you're not the only person going through this. But what the song most say is that you miss that person, and all the memories hurts you because all you want to do is to go back to the first time you met the person.

Regardless if the song was for a TV show or not, here's another interpretation from someone who's gone through loss on a different level, and maybe I read into things differently. I know this song is about a lost relationship, whether addiction or a love. But when I hear this song it brings me a very deep sadness, because I think about losing a child? I've lost quite a few pregnancies, and this song brings me back to each one of them. I can only imagine how this song would feel to parents who have lost born children. The "I had all and then most of you some and now none of you" part is the worst. Another reason I interpret it this way is the "when the night was filled with terror, and your eyes were filled with tears, when you had not touched me yet" part. It could easily be a partner describing the debilitating depression the other (and themselves) go through after losing a child, and in my case, losing them before they were able to impact us as family rather than just a couple. I guess once you experience something like that, even break-up songs bring you there :/ sad

The Night We Met is as clear as the sky, the interpretation. Idk if this is from a tv series. Regarding your problem, I think 46 years of waiting for your love is too much, you are already 63. I don't think she is the right girl for you, if she loved you? how come she married someone else and now she sees you even if she is married? Are you out of your mind? You are wasting your time and your life with her. What the hell you are suppose to do? End your relationship and connection with her. If she really loved you, it should be the two of you who are a couple now and if she cares about you, she will stay away from you. Please never look back. Hope this helps. - Too old for relationships

I did not know this song came from a tv series when I wrote the reason as to what I thought it meant.

Regret for not holding on, and being haunted later in life, and pleading to go back and make it right from the night we met. My only question is the cut on his forehead, sounds like a car wreck, for he wished he’d not ridden with her, and then putting a Note with her name by what appears to be a temporary headstone, did she die in the wreck, and he pleads to go back and stop her from driving so she would still be with him now? He all of you, some of you, and now none of you. I’m am in the situation and been in love with someone since we were 17, yet she had never touched me nor I her. And even after 46 years, I still do not know what to do. I want her but I cannot have her. Oh she would leave with me by just seeing me, but I cannot do that to the man she married. In fact I have seen her within the week. We spent time together, and after 46 years she is ready to come be with me leaving all behind. I love you forever and I cry almost daily for you. I love you Debbie Shelton, Luke Lamar...oh god take me back to the night we met for my heart is still there with her, and hers with me, so tell me, what the hell am I suppose to do?

    Here’s how I interpreted it:
His girlfriend/wife/whatever died of some disease that slowly weakened her (I imagined something like cancer originally, but it makes just as much sense with something like depression).

“I am not the only traveler
Who has not repaid his debt”
He is saying how he’s not the only person with emotional baggage (debt) from a previous relationship that he needs to work through (repay).

“I've been searching for a trail to follow again
Take me back to the night we met”
He’s trying to continue with his life and move on, but just wishes he could go back to when they met so they could be happy again, or perhaps he just wants to feel the way he felt on that night again.

“And then I can tell myself
What the hell I'm supposed to do
And then I can tell myself
Not to ride along with you”
He can tell himself what to do to move on and be happy again (but can’t do it), but at least he can tell himself not to “ride along with” her, i.e. kill himself just to die and be with her.

“I had all and then most of you
Some and now none of you
Take me back to the night we met”
When they first met, they were madly in love and had all of each other. Then as she started to get more sick, she became a little distant. As she neared death, she was barely even there, but he stayed with her and held on to that last “some” of her until she died and suddenly he had none of her. He wants to go back to when they met so he can have all of her again.

“I don't know what I'm supposed to do
Haunted by the ghost of you
Oh, take me back to the night we met”
He doesn’t know how to deal with the fact that she’s gone and can’t stop thinking about her. The titular line is reiterated to drive home how desperate he is to be with her again.

“When the night was full of terrors
And your eyes were filled with tears”
These two lines refer to how she was scared about it and came to him in tears.

“When you had not touched me yet
Oh, take me back to the night we met”
I believe he then can’t take talking about the last part, so he jumps back to before she came to him with that horrible news to the night they first met.

“I had all and then most of you
Some and now none of you
Take me back to the night we met
I don't know what I'm supposed to do
Haunted by the ghost of you
Take me back to the night we met”
This repition of these lines is quieter because it is not out of desperate anger at himself like before, but instead out of sad desperation and longing alone.

This beautiful and haunting song is about looking back at a bad relationship and regretting ever getting into it in the first place. This is despite knowing from the first moment how it

We've all been in relationships where we were worse off than when we got into them (I am not the only Traveler, who has not repaid his debt).

The singer daydreams about going back to that first moment when they met. All the indications that this was a bad relationship were there, in plain sight, but he pursued it nonetheless (When the night was full of terrors and the your eye were filled with tears. When you had not touched me yet). And despite this, continued onwards. And before he knew it his relationship turned into ashes in his mouth (I had all of you, some and now, none of you).

And now the singer is left haunted by the ghost of that relationship daydreaming about going back to that night and making a different decision from that very first moment.

It's about regret. Regret for not seeing the signs. Regret that no one else did either. Regret for not going down a different road from the beginning. The night they met was the night that started her down the path of self destruction. He wants to stop those events before they happen. Instead, he was falling in love with her as she was slipping away but did nothing about it.

I think it's about a person not seeing all the signs of someone in crisis until it was too late to save them. The first line is about how everyone else missed or ignored the signs as well. He wants to go back and recognize the signs from the very beginning and get her help before she started spiralling. He'd go back and tell himself to recognize those signs instead of watching her stumble down the path of suicide.
