Mat Kearney: Seventeen Meaning
Song Released: 2011
Seventeen Lyrics
Riding those summer streets to the corner of High and 13
Me and other city boys running too wild and too bored
Looking for a grown man's toys out at that corner store
Well they threw the money...
-
In the beginning of the song, he is describing how, at seventeen, he and his friends got an old man to buy wine for them, but the cops got him and he took a trip down to the station for the first time. He was scared as hell.
In the second verse, he gets his girlfriend pregnant even though they aren't right for each other. When she had a miscarriage, he mourned for the baby.
Years later, the love of his life thinks she is pregnant, and now he is crying because of how happy he is. "Funny how the years switch around the tears." He sees the pregnancy test and hopes for a daughter or a son, even though he is still scared as hell, he is wishing for a kid. -
He meets a girl, accidentally has a baby with her when he was seventeen. She has a miscarriage, and he never forgives himself. When he grows up, he falls in love again and has another baby with a girl and he realizes the age difference.
