Michelle Branch: All You Wanted Meaning
All You Wanted Lyrics
I wanted everything
So I tried to be like you
And I got swept away
I didn't know that it was so cold
And you needed someone
to show you the way
So I took your hand and we figured out
That when the tide comes
I'd...

This song talks about a girl who loves a guy who thinks is cool. She needs to be like him, but when she understands that this guy’s life is not what she thinks. It all changes.
This guy needs a girl that understands this busy lifestyle and lonely working life, someone who complements this.
So she understands and offers to complete him, and eventually saves him. Someone that will finally understand him and care for him.
Amazing song -
you try hide your drug addiction, your partner senses your increasing distance she doesnt say anything fearing she might lose you...when your high where do you in your mind? why she's not good enough? addiction sucks.

This song is about a lonely teenager girl who has no boyfriend or sweetheart. It's just her and her two friends. She hangs out with them, her friends have no guys either.
She ''got swepted away'' because these guys stare at her but pass her by
Despite her fun with her two friends shes still lonely because she dosen't have a guy to go out with which means:''So lonely inside''
She sees these boys and girls togther huging and kissing holding hands which means ''So busy out there''
She dosen't have a guy:
''And all you wanted
Was somebody who cares''
This part is about her two friends all she has is them shes hangs out with:
So hurry hold me
Your hand is all I have to keep me hanging on
Her and her friends are obviously seniors which means they will all graduate:
''Please can you tell me
So I can finally see
Where you go when you're gone''
Her two friends are all she has
''If you need me you know I'll be there''
I could be wrong but even if this isn't the correct meaning. I think this interpation will still work.
Michelle Branch wrote this when she was a teenager. -
My ex-wife’s best friend sent these lyrics to my wife a few months before our marriage dissolved. I found it looking through my wife’s things one day. I was looking through her things trying to find clues as to why our marriage was ending. This song has haunted me ever since I first saw those lyrics hand-written on a card to her. I actually read the lyrics before I ever heard the song and they pierced me. It was foreshadowing of what was to come – for me and my marriage. For me, it has a very specific meaning. My ex-wife was very beautiful and I always sensed that her friend was jealous of her for a myriad of reasons. My ex-wife’s best friend’s marriage dissolved a few months before ours did. Misery loves company. My ex-wife and her friend were both flight attendants. Her friend showed her the ropes of meeting men and partying on trips. Together they figured out an alternate happiness. So she took my wife’s hand and together they took trips with other men and partied together. When the time came, she did in fact lead her away. If you want to, I can save you. I can take you away from here and from him (me). All you wanted was somebody who cares and that’s me (my wife’s friend) - not your husband. For me, the song is full of double meanings. In hindsight, I don’t know who really wanted to be like whom. In the end, both my wife and her friend were swept away and I was left cold, empty, lonely, and broken. That is probably not what the artist meant for the song to say but it is what it has meant for me all these years. Art is about interpretation.

This song has always reminded me of my older sister, so I'll go from that. I believe that this song is about admiring someone and idolizing someone, but not really entirely knowing them. Then there was a point where they experienced something similar to the person they idolized, or maybe just got to know them better, and realized that the person really wasn't so great and aloof and cool but really just lonely, lost, and scared.

This is a song about a girl who has a crush, or is already the girlfriend of a guy who likes to party. She also starts to be a party girl, so she can be like him. But she comes to realize such partying and irresponsibility has consequences. However, while she forsakes the lifestyle, the boy she loves doesn't. So, she means to tell him that if he wants to, she can save him from the loneliness and pain of irresponsibility and hedonism, and actually fill that hole in him he's been trying to fill with pleasure.
