Middle Class Rut: New Low Meaning
New Low Lyrics
No room to move around
And this box is getting smaller
I'm trying to get out
How did I get so far
From where I was
When did I decide
To lose my way
Who have I become
I've got a new low
All 52 cards in a row
I see...

1TOP RATED
#1 top rated interpretation:Let me start by saying its not "bow-wow" but rather "bad, well"
In context:
You feel bad well so do I, yeah so do I.
And also is not "In the window of this box"
but rather "In a windowless box"
In context:
I did my time in a windowless box, like it or not.
Personally; I think this song is about a man who is trapped inside his mind, going through a lot of mental anguish and has either decided on or is contemplating suicide.
He starts by saying he feels trapped inside his mind,
questioning how he changed so much as a person; how who he was managed to get away from him.
Then "I've got a new low, all 52 cards in a row" There are 52 cards in a deck; and he's saying how he's reached rock bottom and everything is lined up now for him to die because he's realized he can't let go of his past/troubles.
He then talks about how people in his life have used him as a shoulder to cry on; when really he has been hurting himself, and all he feels like is someone people use to make themselves feel better.
The chorus talks about his depression, how he's been everywhere and sometimes he's been happy but for most of his life he's been sad.
He then goes onto say "I make mistakes just like everybody else..." That line is pretty self-explanatory.
He makes mistakes he can't forgive himself for.
In the last stanza; he talks about the time he has spent feeling this way; that like it or not it happened to him, and he realizes he only has today (maybe to commit the suicide?) because yesterday is gone and tomorrow isn't comming.
Thats just my interpretation; I wouldn't really know unless I asked x) -
If it isn't about being In jail then I'm shell shocked. Love this song!

Gambling and heroin.

I think this song is about jail. doing time. he stuck in a box and he cant get out ( jail cell). the person made a mistake that landed him in there. thats why he lost himself. when your in jail people forget about you. thats why he says who am i a cold shoulder left to cry. he stuck in a jail cell has no place to got except his mind so therefore he just runs in place meaning hes just thinking over and over. he has so many directions but dosent know where to go. he can choose to get involved or not. he did his time in a windowless box like it or not. did your time there are no windows in jail cells. i make mistakes like everybody else. clearly he knows hes not perfect but he cant forgive himself for the crimes and or people he hurt. this song to me is def. about jail.

I think the song is about a person who made bad choices in life and now they relize they are not where they want or should be.
-
I believe that it is about a man who has been everywhere and tried everything but nothing works so he just hides away and hates himself.
-
this is someone who had something bad and life changing happen to him. he realizes the consequences too late and now has to get himself out and cling to the ups which occasionally occur in order to keep going.
-
I believe this song to be about a man trapped by his own emotions, expeireinces, choices, etc. in life. He is trapped within himself and sees no ways out until the end when he decides yesterday is gone, today is all I have left, and tomorrow aint (and wont ever be) here.
