Missy Higgins: The River Meaning
The River Lyrics
-
This is a really good and emotional song, probobly the saddest song I’ve ever heard in my opinion. I made me cry everytime I heard it and still does. Missy Higgins is so clever to have made this song like omg. Good job!!

It is just one line but I think 'Somebody's bed will never be warm' could mean that her life will never be the same and she would never feel right again. Idk just a guess.

This girl was being abused, most likely by a close family member. "angry gin" tells you that the adult who abused her was drunk... there are two things that come to mind automatically. Her father got drunk and beat and raped her, which would explain the smell of gin on her or he just got drunk beat her. She felt trapped and couldn't escaped the situation. Her only escape was suicide because she could no longer endure the abuse for the love and affection she thought wasn't worth it. But she still needed it and that's what trapped her.
-
My interpretation is that this song is about a girl who has had a really torturous life and she commits suicide by drowning herself in a river. "Somebody's bed will never be warm again", is a metaphor, sort of. It means that she will never be home again, never sleeping in her bed.

I think it's really rather straight forward. Sure, in most songs there's a hidden meaning but if you just open your eyes and look at the lyrics the answer lies there.
A girl, barely 10 years old, runs away from home.I'm sure we've all done it once in our life time. And her face is numb from the running, and she's young and is hurting.
She bares problems that no 10 year old should.
She clearly drowns herself, as her bed will never be warm again and the river is keeping the friend.
I think Missy Higgins just really beautifully describes the troubles that cloud people, especially young people, and so simply yet intricately describes the loss of will to live due to life's burdens.
Beautiful. Simply beautiful.
